Signed the paperwork this afternoon and start Tuesday.

Don't mean to write this thread as an excuse to hammer on higher education, I'm really f***ing thrilled to be making some progress in my career after a long ass time in college and credential programs, but I want to highlight some of the s*** I did wrong for the younger users here.

First off, I'm teaching high school remotely at a livable rate, even for California. Benefits are fantastic and HR was generous enough to move me up the pay scale for experience I couldn't quite fulfill. Basically slid me 5k a year. Once my wife gets her old rate back, my household is looking at a cool 140k. I've got my sights on a nice 2b in Burbank, somewhere my daughter can grow up.

The job is tough. I'm gonna be teaching in dropout recovery for young adults 16-24 trying to get their life on track. They're here to learn a trade, get a full diploma instead of a GED and I really get to make an impact on the economy instead of teaching kids who understand the value of education only in the abstract. The age range/experience level is exactly what I wanted and because their curriculum is online they won't be forcing us into the classroom.

All this in the middle of a pandemic and economic crisis. Thank God for my wife, telling me to stop being a b****, get off the couch and get active. I pretty much gave up. No interviews for months and then the stars lined up at the 11th hour.

    But that's the good news.

The bad news is that I'm almost 30 years old, drowning in student loan debt and some credit card debt that I built up while I pieced things together. I'm in the hood. Someone came through and lit up a carport down the road from my place. A close friend of mine got robbed at gunpoint a couple weeks ago like 10 minutes away from here.

Did I mention that I graduated in 2013? Yeezus was fresh.

I quickly discovered I wasn't happy. Packed up and went to Cali so at least my wife could use her film degree. In the meanwhile, I just floated around collecting degrees and taking up resources. People tell you not to get all hung up on who is making the money, but when your life is a Lil Jimmy skit and your girl carrying you, it's not even so much emasculating as it feels like you're letting your best friend down.

But I did find my way eventually. I do love teaching. I get a rush out of my work and it's nice to feel relied on in some small way after years of the opposite.

It's not my dream, I have other goals, but we all need a paycheck and something decent to get up for every day. I haven't had that since February and anyone who talked to me in the coronavirus thread knows how depressed I was. About ready to end it in March and I'm not proud to say that now, but it's the s*** we all go through.

Look, take it from someone who took a really inefficient path to a decent situation: you don't owe it to anyone to follow their path. You don't have to go to corner college and you don't have to do what your daddy did. It's cliche, but reflect on what you're doing when you work or study. Do you hate it? Do you love it? Figure out a reasonable plan with a budget you can live with and make it happen.

Every day I'm going to be working with people considering college. I'm gonna tell them the same thing: if you don't know how it's gonna make you money, don't go. If you're going for the sociocultural aspect, go to CC and knock out your core classes on the cheap.

I wasted so much time and money bruh. You don't have to. It's good to have dreams, it's good to make money. There are many ways to do that and I picked a lot of the wrong ones. But I'm here now and feeling good about it.

Bless up, KTT fam. I'm gonna stay s***posting on my downtime.

I can relate with you man

Graduated with my degree a few years back, ended up working in a white collar position in logistics/shipping. I hated it and only now have I made a career change to being an Electrician, finally something I enjoy and pays well too.

    Congrats man
