Gallant fits very strongly into the 'alternative-R&B' sub-genre that erupted in the 2010s with artists like The Weeknd and Frank Ocean. He uses extremely quality production with electronic influences and is an excellent songwriter. He has two studio albums out and an extended play. His 2016 debut album Ology was nominated for a Grammy.

Erika de Casier is making R&B that feels like a modern interpretation of the 90s. It meshes genres like G-Funk and UK Garage into the foundational sound of that era and the result is an incredibly well-polished debut record in Essentials. It feels self-assured and modern despite wearing the hallmarks of 90s R&B on it's sleeve.

From his debut project, 2017's Peak, Choker has been labeled and often dismissed as a Frank Ocean clone. While the similarities are striking, Choker offers much more than just a cheap knockoff. Beautiful songwriting, wonderfully unique instrumentals entirely self-produced and an incredible talent for melodies, Choker's discography offers perhaps the first true glimpse into a post-Blonde world.

It's no secret that Arin Ray is industry. In fact, his career began on one of the most laughably 'industry-plant' platforms - the now defunct X Factor USA. But in the 6 years since his appearance on the show, Arin Ray stayed out of the limelight, instead penning and producing songs behind the scenes for superstars from Juice WRLD to Chris Brown. His solo music is undeniably commercial but behind the accessibility lies impressive songwriting and melodies. Platinum Fire, his 2018 debut album feels like the mega-smash release of the year in some alternate universe where R&B was the dominant genre.

In 2016, Ruthven sent demos to an email address for the Paul Institute, a record label founded by Jai & A.K. Paul - two brothers signed to XL Recordings and widely heralded for their influence in 2010s electronic music. Ironically they had already intended to contact him, after finding his music themselves online - Ruthven had posted his music on the original KTT site. A fireman at the time, he joined the Paul Institute, releasing two funk and R&B songs 'Evil' and 'Hypothalamus'. Comparing anyone to Prince is a tall feat but it's difficult to not hear the likeness when listening to the closing minutes of 'Hypothalamus' in particular.

Brent faiyaz
both too big for this list
I tried to exclude anyone over 2.5m monthly listeners and anyone who'd had a recent major placement - like Chicago Freestyle
