A decades-spanning exploration of a woman's life in Mississippi and an ode to the generations of people, places, and ineffable moments that shape us.
Premiered at Sundance
Still hate he’s working with Disney and that Amazon show, while shot beautifully, just looks so reductive for a director of his caliber to be doing
A24 is legit the only studio that gives Barry the projects that suit his talent. He’s so far beyond woke lames like Peele or Duvernay.

He’s gotta get the bag no?

My comment is more of a slight on Disney and Amazon than on him.
I moreso hate how the industry shifted from the days where a director/writer could pitch a huge idea to a big corporation and potentially get it made to now where every idea is pitched by the corporation/producers and directors are just picked out of a tree to make it exactly how the corp wants it.

100%
Tbh I got super excited when I heard he’s doing an Alvin Ailey biopic next but now it’s looking like that’s been pushed to the back for the Lion King Sequel. Which I could care less about.

yup, the idea that directing a big blockbuster gives a director more freedom to do whatever they want on their next big studio project is so not true lol they just go from one big movie back to making smaller projects they can get funded they back to big studio project but we'll never see another Matrix, Blade Runner and even the Nolan blockbusters are a rare breed.
Denis is getting to handle big properties but WB would never let him make an original sci-fi blockbuster. Even if they did it would be a rare case like Nolan. The situation only worsens if you're a Black director.
I want that Stevie Wonder time travel movie from Barry so bad!

and yeah even with Nolan, he really got into the perfect situation where he made successful small movies and then got a guaranteed alley oop from WB with making Batman movies. Obviously he knocked them out of the park and made very beloved films, but its so much easier to make big hits with Batman vs. doing Dune or a Blade Runner sequel no matter how good they may be. The one great thing Denis has going for him is that he likely is able to influence studios to take a chance on a project that probably would not have been green lit otherwise (like a 200 million budgeted Dune movie is still crazy to imagine happening)
Nowadays, its just not really possible for people like Nolan to exist. Taiki Waititi might be the closest at this point to even getting anywhere near that lee way and even then hes mostly doing smaller films right now, while occasionally just jumping on another studio tentpole. Studios just wanna hire small yes men indie filmmakers and they just go from one tent pole to another until they either fail, get tired of being exploited, or become just as bad as the producers themselves.
Whoa....I wonder if that will still happen

there's no trauma p*** or woke angle, it'll never get made.
Did anyone catch this at Sundance? It was one of the films available to watch online

Nah. I contemplated it a lot but ended up not buying. I read it’s narratively structure real different, kind of like ‘tree of life’
Nice shoutout to Aftersun too
Wait I made this thread TWO years ago?? Could have sworn I made it last year. Times f***in moving
