one reason is those numbers are inaccurate. you could open the site for one second and close it and it would show you as active for a while. it also counted web scrapers, bots, search engine crawlers etc .and had no way of knowing if someone is actually on the site still.
we're not directly tracking/logging things like last activity or users actively viewing the site, and any "online users" number we potentially did show would be more accurate and probably lower — so people would be unfairly comparing completely different metrics... even though we actually have more monthly posts/views/active users etc.
but the main reason is i'm not really trying to build a traditional "forum", we'll have some kind of online status, but it will be more about friends/followers and threads (particularly chat threads/groups)... more like discord or something.
so we won't have an "online users count", but i can't think of many sites and apps that do?

When albums would drop (like kanye) and there would be 18k+ users and it kinda gave you an idea how crazy the traffic is on the site at the moment. Knowing now that its not accurate data i guess it doesnt really matter.

np. and yeah i get what you mean. you can still get an idea of how crazy things are though (especially on desktop) with everything live updating. like the 6ix9ine thread on friday was crazy
