I was a volunteer fireman for like 3 years.

It was pretty fun, but after the 3rd or 4th car wreck I went too I was about done.

I assume you made this topic because you have an innate desire to become a firefighter yourself. YSL Sakchaser, if my assumption is right, what makes you want to become a firefighter?

  • Oct 19, 2021

Stress level must be at 9000

    Hard pass

I know you can work as a part time volunteer (not really volunteer work since you’re still being paid). I feel pretty strongly about doing my part to help my community, and I also love to learn about stuff that’s foreign to me.

Right now, I’m just trying to learn more about the profession before I commit fully

Were you working a day job while doing this?

What was it like stress wise?

Were you a black person/ person of color working as a firefighter?

This is a beautiful read. Very smart to also research well before jumping into the job. I would suggest scouring the internet for information over trusting these KTT2 pranksters though. Good luck with whatever path you choose to embark on.

I like KTT because it’s nice to get first hand experience/ thoughts on stuff. It’s p easy to filter the trolls out.

I got my fire chief number, just kinda nervous to make the call and don’t wanna end up wasting they time either

True, I feel like reactions will be sparse in here. But good to get a feeler for sure. Do the research you want and then make the decision. Let it all work out.

My dad was one for 25 years.

My dad passed away 3 days before his retirement. Prob a year or two after that, I decided to do it too.

I was a firefighter for 8 months when I suddenly got d*** tested and had to quit.

It was such an incredible experience though.

When I applied for fire academy, I failed the first entrance exam, a physical test.

The test had you carry fire hose (50 lbs) up 4 flights of stairs, at the top you pull up a rope with another 50 lbs hose attached. Go back down the stairs. There was a “sled” with a very heavy weight on it, we had to use a sledgehammer to slide the weight across the sled. Then we grabbed a hose pulled it out across the cement maybe 50 yards and flashed the nozzle. Then the last thing we had to do was drag a 200 lb dummy (could’ve been more I can’t remember) back across the 50 yards………the first time my ass collapsed and passed out right at the literal end. Had to call an ambulance out and give me fluids at the hospital. But!!!!

I collected myself after the fact and passed that s*** the next time.

When I passed thru academy I got hired on the same department my dad had worked at cuz I just didn’t see it any other way. Plus it was people I had known that worked there and they knew me my whole life. So basically it was like I had a good In.

During my time there I went to mainly allot of old people falling calls but don’t get me wrong there was some bad s*** too.

My lucky ass got to put out 3 different fires during those 8 months. A car fire was my first one. I was so nervous I asked my lieutenant if I should put my gloves on 🥴 the second one was oddly enough right across the street from my grandmas house. Turned out the lady that lived there was a hoarder and had tons of junk on the ground, the kids rooms were absolutely filthy. Couldn’t see s*** when I walked in the door so much smoke. Dragging my hose around the living room not knowing wtf I was even stepping on. She had put a pizza box in the oven and somehow it caught on fire. It was an easy extinguish but unfortunately the bird passed and a few dogs were unconscious I can’t recall if they survived. Nobody was home fortunately and I’m sure the kids were helped out of that hoarding and horrendous living conditions. The last fire I did was this intense shed fire. Not much to say here but this thing was RIPPING LOL.

Some other crazy calls were a homeless man getting hit by a car in a area where cars are easily hitting 50 mph. A f***ed up set of calls was me going to this mobile home park where this fairly young grandma and her son and his gf (both junkies) would constantly overdose. 3 different times we went there and on the last time we found out the dad passed away and she passed away during that overdose. They had a young daughter who just doesn’t have any parents anymore.

All in all, @op it’s a very honorable job. But let me tell you, you have to really really really want to wake up and do that s*** every day (not literally every day). You can’t go there half assing. You gotta want to learn that s*** and exceed at it. There WILL be bad days and it IS dangerous af. The pay isn’t crazy good for the things that you might have to do, but if you have the “bug” (idk my dad used to work at a marina that caught on fire and said he caught the bug helping them put out the fire).

    Yes.

Fires were not stressful, just going to the wrecks and seeing people dead was what I didn't like.

    No.
