Thinking of buying and starting this book to get back into reading, but wanted to hear if others liked it (and if they recommendations for books similar to theme I've been reading about)

Read it back in high school don’t recall finishing it but it was a really good read.

Definitely wanna reread one day and actually finish it bc I remember really digging the main character and the whole invisible man spiel

Read it once in high school and once in 2020. Beautifully written but I did find it a little more cynical the second time around. Clearly the story of someone who became totally disillusioned even while living through a time of transformative political action.

When Kendrick started rapping about yams I thought about the depiction of them in the book from the street vendor

would you say it's similar to Catcher in the Rye in terms of discovering yourself and your identity?

As the title would imply it's more about a lack of identity imo. He kind of falls through history. He is subject to it and conforms around it whether it be the school or the city, work or politics, etc. It seems like he only really has agency at the end when he's formed a perspective. A negative agency really. A rejection of it all.
