    the only thing i can think of is the beastie boys starting as a punk band before turning to rap

    let's exclude artists who have rap side projects or aliases but primarily do other genres

    Justin Bieber somewhat with journals

    Like dude said with Ariana grande and seven rings, I kinda group in pop acts going "urban" (more black r&b/rap esque beats and cadences) for an album cycle with this lol

    I think it’s just a difficult genre to dip into

    Same way not many writers are poets but most poets have written prose (fiction, memoir, essays, criticism or journalism etc.)

    Is it less demographic than the Gospel / R&B examples I provided? Rap is a black genre.

    Also, a ton of pop stars did embrace hip-hop production and aesthetics. Trap especially, but even before that. Posty just did that part first.
