Title is a work in progress, feels like I worded that poorly. But I guess it wouldn't be a Tuxedo DOOM thread if I didn't do that

This is a thread topic that I want to have exist outside of the current drama between Kim and Ye, considering that this is something I have contemplated to myself and have had several back and forths with my girl about WAY before all this stuff started transpiring. I've had plenty of debates on here expressing how I don't believe that the internet is a place for children and never truly will be.

And before anyone says it, because there is always going to be someone that's gonna come in this thread to make this tired point, yes we know that it is ultimately inevitable to prevent your kids from being exposed to all sorts of stuff. It's not realistic to think your child isn't gonna be susceptible to things whenever they're at school, around friends, or any other time their parents aren't able to be around. As someone who "grew up on the internet" I understand that more than anyone.

There, I saved you a paragraph.

Doesn't change the fact that as a parent, there is a responsibility to need to do what you feel is best for your children to the best of your ability.

With that said, I've thought long and hard about this, and I think I've come up with the best, logical and reasonable set of conditions for when I eventually have children of my own:

    1. Unless it's school related, my child will not be allowed to "recreationally" browse the internet BEFORE the age of 13.

    2. My children won't be allowed to have an "internet presence" until they're 17 and have earned their first paycheck (that means no social media accounts, they're not allowed to upload any photos and videos of themselves anywhere. Gaming platforms like Xbox Live could be up for debate, but I feel like I'd most likely be against it).

    Thoughts?

According to Dr. Gabor Maté, around 16/17. He probably right, but you're gonna have a tough battle ahead of you if your socio-economic status isn't high.

Ok, so I got the right idea then

  • I wouldn’t wanna be a super controlling parent but I got exposed to p*** at 11 so….I think the right age is around 14 years old

If you raise your kids properly, they won't waste their time bs on the internet.

Show them how to use these tools, it'll empower them. Your fear will stunt their growth. I'm with you on refraining from social media though.

Would try to shelter my kid from the internet as long as realistically possible, seeing kids raised on iPads and addicted to tech scares me now.. would hate to have a drone for a kid

I was on it in elementary school but my parents also had me in sports, music and other extra curriculars.

It’s only an issue if you let it raise your kids and you don’t monitor their usage

Y’all gotta realize we were all the same way

Don’t lie and act like we all weren’t hooked to our Gameboys and glued to the tv playing video games when we were kids

I remember being obsessed with MySpace when I was 12 (best social media OAT don’t @ me) and I think I turned out fine lol

My nephew from a young age was on my phone or his moms or someone’s playing games and watching dumb YouTube videos. But he also loves to be active. He LOVES playing basketball and always goes outside to play and practice by himself or whoever will play with him. He’s 12 and he’s a great kid man. The type of kid I want if I have kids someday

The point is, it’s all about balance. Let them use the internet but also make sure he’s active and in sports or just likes to go outside and play

Kind of crazy to think of the different people me and everyone else in our generation would be without the internet. I must have been hooked in since I was like 6 or 7. I was raised by my parents just as much as I was raised by the internet.

How would you monitor something like that and do you think thatd put your kid at a disadvantage?
