launched his mainstream career with a Ye sample and ended up dissin that man, i will never respect cole.
even though this was a throw away single release before C3, this song and performance def took Wayne to another level
he a had a few songs out at that time but I remember this one really making him known everywhere
Successfully capitalized off livelove hype with a single that pleased mainstream crowd and mixtape fans
First thing that came to mind
This s*** made Travis a star
Up until that video none of my high school friends ever talked to me about Drake, then everybody asked me if I've seen the video, it was big as hell I wouldn't be surprised if my mom saw it
Are u from outside of the us?
??? It definitely did not even in just in retrospect but at the time it was clear
Artistically not commercially
GUMMO for 6ix9ine even though Owee & Poles1469 were big for the first time people heard him when he was semi-underground

To be fair, hov forced Cole to make that
And just cause you’re inspired by someone doesn’t mean u can’t criticize later

Hotline bling elevated him
I don’t think he was up there in pop stardom before this
The song raised him to Taylor Swift, Adele, Beyoncé levels of fame

man was biting the kanye inflections too lot of people were doing the “hahhh” s*** around then though. i like to think the french montana verse on work remix killed it off
i wanna say gold digger for kanye but if we’re being fr stronger gotta be the single that elevated him like no other

It's a weird thing about Drake and Europe especially Central/Eastern. People listen to rap around here, Travis is huge for example, Drake is a recognizable figure of course, but he's not as big for some reason. I barely hear him at parties etc.

most people around the world listening to rap still rocking heavy with eminem
generally, the only other rappers a lot of people with english as a secondary language listen to are the pop-rappers. post malone & drake are elite names in that regard and I do distinctly remember Hotline Bling being the one that made Drake a household name in a lot of the countries where he was yet to establish a presence.
