there's nothing wrong with music sounding rough or amateurish
thats why i edited my post to replace those terms with ‘bad’

and it's not okay for them to want their music to sound a certain way because you think it sounds bad?

i think it sounds bad. you do realise we’re on a music discussion forum here?

yeah but you saying you think it sounds bad
and you saying it's not okay for them to want it to sound like that because you think it's bad
are 2 different things
is nexima gonna hop in every thread where anyone is criticising anything and call them out for it now
i don't think I've ever listened to an album and been like "these songs are good but I can't listen to this mixing!!"
birds might be the first time I've said that. it actually hurts my ears.

clipping is not something that is ever actively sought out in mixing and ive never really seen anyone claim it sounds good. if you could provide some examples of a mix that sounds like something most people spend hours actively trying to avoid sounding better than one done properly then i would be happy to hear it

So you're saying Mike Dean was lying and he didn't make it sound like that on purpose?

if thats what they were going for then cool but it honestly sounds like s*** to me. it doesn't come off dirty and gritty it comes off badly mixed and unlistenable at times.

how i am i meant to know that
i will say i would be very surprised if its on purpose. either that or it was just a dumb idea.
i dont know why you would try and make your mix sound worse. bad mixing =/= lofi. you can make lo fi music thats rough around the edges without hampering everything that makes up the music
there is a ridiculous amount of audible clipping on almost every track but i guess its okay because Mike Dean claims its on purpose

maybe it doesn't sound worse to them
tho if you want an example of audio terrorism listen to stevie wonder's harmonica on stop trying to be god goddamn who engineered that s***
maybe it doesn't sound worse to them
then he is bad at mixing
mixing is the very last thing anyone should ever be discussing when it comes to critiquing an album. it should be about the artist and the songs and thats it. if you’re talking about something that you would largely never think of when discussing any other album, then in my opinion thats a big problem.
there's nothing wrong with music sounding rough or amateurish
its a f***ing embarrassment to them and a middle finger to actual amateur artists who dont have the millions of dollars their fans have paid them to ensure high fidelity
if theyre doing it on purpose thats fine but theyre clearly not

idk if we can trust mike dean or not but he has never lied to me
edit: at least i don't think he has
then he is bad at mixing

you think he's bad at mixing because he made it sound a way that him and the artist like?

if mixing is a profession that people spend a lot of time studying and practising to avoid the way your mix sounds, is it crazy to say its a bad mix?
i mean if Trav truly wanted his mixes to sound bad then why not just mix them himself? a bit pointless getting a pro to do it when really you dont even want a mix at all.

I don't think it would be crazy to say that you don't enjoy the way it is mixed, but it is crazy to act like they are doing something wrong because you don't like it
I think he probably has Mike Dean do it because he likes how it sounds when Mike Dean does it
