Our drop this week finds us in a place we find ourselves from time to time: Atlanta. Before the days of bricks, strippers, chains, rims, Atlanta was a hot bed for soul talent. It was here in the hallways of Booker T Washington High School, he would be found blowing the harmonica. Lee was involved in church & influenced by his father who played piano in a USO band, this likely made him more motivated to be a musician. Sadly, his dad passed away in 1955 before he could see Lee be the artist that he was on these records.

Somewhere as a child this man made a concentrated effort he was going to be a recording artist. Lee Moses was in good company with other people who showed that the path was possible. I imagine it was a process of years before you even got noticed as a vocalist. Oh, one last thing in the talents of Lee Moses, he was a blistering guitarist as well. You will hear that in the very little music that Lee left us. I will let you hear it for yourself.

Moses taught himself guitar, organ & drums. It was this discipline that would make lee into a formidable performing artist. He would get his professional start at a prestigious night club “Royal Peacock” in Atlanta. His band “The Showstoppers” would become the house band of the club. This determined attitude as musician enabled him to play with soul legend’s like James Brown & other’s.

Somewhere in the 60’s during the flower power days, he was signed and started putting out singles produced by Jonathan Brantley. One of hissingle’s was a powerful shouting track called “Bad Girl” .You can hear it here:

You hear an expressive singer in command of his faculties and that’s where the Otis, Wilson Pickett gritty soul shuffle with this funky guitar riff. Amazing power for such. Young man. You can get the idea why Brantley was spending a lot of time trying to develop Lee as an artist.

I’m sure during this time, the radio was crowded in the soul market for singles. You had to stand out or have a gimmick to stand out. He continued honing his stage craft and abilities in the clubs of Atlanta. It was there at the time he would perform on the same stage and billing as a young Gladys Knight. Atlanta was good to him but he couldn’t stay there. He had to move to the big apple. With the help of his producer Johnny Brantley, Lee would make the transition from the south to the city that never sleeps.

Now it’s. Unclear when a young Jimi met Lee Moses, but it’s a fact they played together. Now this is where it gets confusing because Lee was somehow involved in posthumous recordings with Johnny Brantley involving Hendrix name. Brantley was responsible for leaking infamous Scene Club bootleg with Jim Morrison. This part of the story is confusing. Long story short, its a mess. But later, Brantley was putting out major fake Hendrix lp’s year after year.

Lee went to work on his one & only lp. It was a mixture of the sounds of the day & also Lee’s psychedelic side was on display as well. It was unique in its sound and there were song’s chosen that showcased Lee’s abilities quite well. His mixture of funk-r&b-soul & his gospel leanings served him well.

Take for example this version of California Dreaming:

Or this funky version of Hey Joe:

    Again, :Banderas:

After Lee’s debut lp flopped and Brantley tried to keep him involved, he left NYC never to return. According to family & friends, Moses thought he could wait out the disco scene. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case. Lee would get addicted to d**** and end up getting clean and in his later years playing lead guitar in a band in Atlanta. But eventually body would fail him and he would pass at the age of 56 in 1998.
As fate would have it with me making this post, a documentary has been filmed about Lee Moses and you will be able to view it shortly.
Below I have included some information links to the film & director as well as the trailer.

For now, enjoy the work that Lee has to offer. Int his thread, I’ve also included the very few photo’s that exist of Mr Moses to give acknowledgement to a very interesting talented spirit in music.

And that concludes on a approaching end of summer, a well deserved artist. Maybe if you live in the Atlanta area and you have a relative named Moses or your last name is Moses, you have a family connection.

    See you next drop

This Sunday we go to the bay for a legendary band that hardly no one talks about. With its catalog mainly out of print, we shed light on a great band that had a lot to offer in afrolatin direction with its diverse musical sound.

Learn more & listen for yourself why still to this day people love this band. Hopefully you will like it too. As I let the drop fam in & open the door on a band that is long overdue that is covered.

Call it what you want but it’s magic and you can take that straight to the bank 🏦. Unbelievable players in this band, fam. They killed stages all over the world.

I have no idea why the majority of their catalog is still out of print , but at least you will have it on Sunday. 😨😎
