  • I love Denzel and think he's an incredible actor but he seriously has no range. This new Gladiator 2 trailer just had me thinking about this. How can he be considered one of the greatest actors of all time when he pretty much just plays a variant of the same character in all his roles? I feel like people give so much s*** to Will Smith for this but I rarely hear this mentioned about Denzel

Might be a hot take but just cause you can do accents doesn’t mean you got range. Range is playing different types of characters/personalities and I feel like Denzel has shown that

  • If you want to hear Denzel do that olden time talk:

Could Will Smith have done Training Day?

  • Idk John Q and the pilot on flight are totally different characters. Not even talking about his early comedy career that’s range don’t fall for the stereotype they say the same about Leo

  • Please tell me which 2 characters are the same

I think this is a somewhat valid observation but I also don’t think it’s some knock against him. You can be an incredible actor without doing accents and voices and s***

Also for the record I haven’t even seen Macbeth

  • honestly every actor has a spectrum of things they do well, 30+ years in there’s gonna be a good amount of “professional serviceable” performances where they basically hit similar beats in different context, where they don’t feel the need to “live” a character, range is also something I feel like people mention without being specific at all about

He's a two time Oscar winner and a Tony winner lol he's excelled with range at the highest levels of acting. You may not have watched a good set of his work.

i feel like you're confusing his well known stage presence for "range." Denzel has a type of style that's immediately recognizable and hard to shake off over 35+ years, but I dont think that means he doesn't have range. He's more than shown he does for decades now.

The Will Smith comparison is ridiculous

I love Denzel but top 5? no way. not even sure he would crack my top 5 even if we just narrowed it down to black male actors tbqh. sam jackson, danny glover, keith david, mario van peebles, ken foree, larry fishburne, delroy lindo.....the competition is fierce.

  • No range?! Please brother don’t be disrespectful.

  • I do kinda get this critique because even though hes played very different characters, he kinda does always utilize the same mannerisms and vocal delivery to every performance. Whether hes playing Malcolm X or a timid family man in Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, he is kinda giving that Denzel type performance you expect.

When I think of range, I think of somebody like Nicholas Cage who can give serious dramatic turns like in Leaving Las Vegas and then absolute bizarro s*** like in Mandy or Wicker Man and just completely change up his approach or how Tom Cruise can be a big action star and then literally be unrecognizable and straight up comedic relief in something like Tropic Thunder or a scam artist in Magnolia. Denzel kinda got the same thing going on as like Leo where no matter what character they're doing, there is a defined way of acting that you know these actors for and they are always doing it.
