Heavily in the last year or so, with Warhammer 2 & Three Kingdoms.
But it took over a decade to manifest, because although I was interested in the battles of Medieval II when I was younger, I just couldn't stand the campaign map. CIV V & XCOM 2 changed that.
Then when Three Kingdoms dropped (an era I'm deeply invested in), everything clicked.
Warhammer was influenced by friends. But my own research into the lore made the experience flames
Specifically speaking with Warhammer 1 & 2, the Mortal Empires system is so damn dope. Carrying over factions, dlc factions and the map from the previous title to the next.
WH3 about to be f***in nuts off faction count alone

24hrs to claim on August 13th
Waiting until 2021 for Steam for the workshop support, but eh its free I guess on Epic
bought warhammer 2 during a sale a month or two ago but havent actually played it yet
Totally.
Rome was one of my first Games for PC back in the day.
Rome 1/2 and Medieval 2 i played and liked the most because I'm interested in booth time periods since growing up.
The small village were I grow up was part of the Roman Limes. (Kastell Gelduba)
And if you grow up in Germany or Europe as a kid you usually like castles and the time period anyways.
Still hoping for a Medieval 3

Shogun 2 is good
Will try it out then, bit similar to Civilization from what I understand, right?

They are definitely different. Civ has different systems as well as the possibility to focus on non combat victories at the end of a game. You have more control over making your empire unique aka where you place cities etc
Total War is really focused on strategic and tactical combat, aspects such as city building, diplomacy and research are secondary. The real time combat in it is incredible. I prefer Total War, especially with its RPG elements as well
