surprised there wasn't a thread for this yet, tho, well, this is a Kanye fan forum. Still, I wanna try and spread the word, this film really f***ed me up just now. Simple enough story of trying to get a divorce in NY manages to be a great buddy film, great road movie and features some fairly amazing subtle acting imo

Don't know how much he was involved really but the Barry Jenkins co-prod is def an indicator here. To me this had the same kind of pure, gentle emotion in it Moonlight had. It's not as visually flashy but still feels like it's using sound and image perfectly (Julia Holter provides a subtle but beautiful score). Masterpiece imo

For a taste I'd recommend watching a preview from the beginning over the trailer since it already sums up so much of the plot. But if you're a trailer person... proceed with caution

It’s all to feed a sexist liberal agenda that all men are bad and nothing is harder than being a woman

This is why I hesitated even making this thread jeeez

I watched this months back and appreciated the message but remember feeling like the film was totally devoid of interesting characters/something to bring me more into the main pov. With that being said, the title scene at least was very effective

Also, the men’s rights activists above me are lame af. An overwhelming majority of cinema’s history is more overtly sexist than this film could dream of being, grow up

first off s/o for calling these lames above out, pretty pathetic

it's extremely subtle but to me there's a lot of character development here (or if not development, just a lot of character). I love that the film usually let's subtle actions speaks instead of words, or words only indirectly express what they're feeling. That's one thing which makes this feel so much more true to life than most films, imo.

First off the relationship between the protagonist and her cousin which is really beautifully established mostly visually in the supermarket, just the fact she's coming along honestly kinda moved me. But then also you see that the protagonist doesn't even know to value how selfless the cousin is and still reveals herself as pretty immature. I could go on but I don't want to bore you

I can’t tell what’s worse: you being too much of a p**** to quote me or you trying to make an excuse for this sexist trash by using whataboutism with sexist cinema from the past

Two wrongs don’t make a right. As for comparing this to problematic cinema from the past, I will say this movie reminded me a lot of His Trust from Griffith. Both are movies which make demeaning generalizations: His Trust assumes all black slaves are fully happy to obey whites and this movie assumes all men are dirty dogs trying to get into every girls pants.

I’m sorry this film didn’t placate your need for respectable male figures. Now you can quote someone else w your “two wrongs don’t make a right” headass bc I would’ve quoted you before if I was interested in a discussion

Don’t need a discussion with you. Just wanted you to have the balls to actually quote me rather than hiding like a b**** trying to subliminally address my point

We’re good now. So piss off

Meh. Aside from the scene in the clinic, this movie was pretty pedestrian. Standard indie fare.

This how I’m feeling tbh. I didn’t even finish it. Wasn’t feeling it at all.

I don’t really care about the message of a film

When it’s something that is as pointed and manipulative as this one, I just find zero value in the story being told
