One of my personal main critiques about fashion, and why I choose not to follow trends (outside of me just feeling like I'm getting too old for certain things), is that I feel as if certain styles and manners of dressing are meant for people who live a particular "lifestyle"

Yes, ultimately I agree with the notion that you should wear whatever you like and feel comfortable in, but at the same time, it should also make sense in terms of matching your lifestyle, or at least your occupation.

I don't know, I just feel like their something goofy about dressing like ASAP Bari or a Raf runway model when you work a cubicle desk job, no?

Which is why I stick to just wearing basic essential-wear/work-wear whatever you wanna call it.

    Thoughts?

Maybe use this thread to discuss and post brands that match this way of thinking?

But that’s one hyper specific lane you just mentioned, there’s so much you can do outside of dressing like A$AP Rocky that’s so much more than just basics and work wear

just wear the banana republic to work during the day and pull out the dark lord rick gear at night.. life all about balance

have an accountant homie who be getting fits off outside of work and he always tells me “we have the rest of our lives to dress like an adult” might as well have fun w it while you still can

having like a distinct personal style that ages well and translates throughout all your looks is cool but also not mad at ppl who like to trend hop cause trying new s*** can be fun

I mean I understand a clown should wear a clown outfit. And a McDonald’s employee should wear a McDonald’s shirt if that’s what you mean

I just said ASAP as a random cursory, with some exceptions of course, I feel like a majority of trends and aesthetics can apply to my main point.

I think you're confusing self-confidence with simply acknowledging that I'm not a rapper/celebrity/public figure or what have you.

That's really what I mean when I say "regular folk"

I take it you’re talking way pass actual dress code that some jobs require.

Idk bro for me personally the s*** I like to wear out and about is s*** I would wear as a rapper, actor, ball player, telemarketer, lawyer, etc.

I have some the same pieces that Bari has (coincidentally not from copying) and I’ve never once thought I had to work a certain job in order to wear it

I clicked on the Bari thread specifically to express those same sentiments, only to see that you beat me to it lol.

I feel like with this post we're getting into the idea of compartmentalizing, which I find very interesting.

Though I kind feel like dressing one way for a particular environment and then switching it when appropriate is kind of proving my point...? If not just a little.

I mean it in that regard, but also in a all encompassing kind of way where you're fully aware of who you are as a person, what you do for a living, and what a typical day in your life composes of, and then taking that in full consideration with how you determine to present yourself... all while maintaining a sense of someone that can be looked at as "fashionable"

I know Bari was just one example you used, but I honestly don’t see anything he’s worn that requires a certain social status or occupation. The bari fits I dislike I wouldn’t wear period.

Where you from? Reason I ask is cus I’m from NY (don’t live there currently cus of school) and that style of dressing is the norm. You see niggas in the hood dressing loud all the time. D*** dealers and 9 to 5ers. So maybe depending on where you live kinda alters your mindset a bit?

It still comes down to caring about other people’s opinions though, no? From my perspective it seems like you’re either worried that people will clown you or think you’re a fraud for wearing “rapper fits” or you’re living by some self-imposed rules

Like anything in life, just wear whatever makes you happy. If that’s choosing just to wear basic essentials then cool, but if you want to wear flyer s*** then that’s fine too. It ain’t that deep, no one’s gonna see you out and confront you about wearing some s*** because you’re not famous

But aren’t most office jobs operating under a certain type of professional dress code? It’s no different to working as a builder and changing your clothes when you get home and you can properly express yourself

I feel ya I’m a teacher when I first started I just wore chinos and button up shirts from
Uniqlo and gap during the week and wear my supreme and streetwear stuff like on the weekend. But now that I’ve gotten older and grown out of that hype streetwear look. I’m more into wearing more workwear and more mature stuff. So now I’m able to find that perfect balance of what I like and what’s appropriate to my job so I don’t have that big contrasting styles anymore. I guess that’s what you’re talking about and you gotta look for. But yeah don’t dress like lil uzi if you sell insurance. It’s fun to have some cool clothes though for when you going out.
