need advice on good ones to read / authors to check out
i read barely any fiction books anymore and wanna be able to burn through short stories in between non-fiction works, looking for any recs
Anything by Junji Ito
gotchu bro, I read a lot of short story collections over the past two years. my favorites are:
Pastoralia, Civilwarland in Bad Decline, and Tenth of December by George Saunders
Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang
The Office of Historical Corrections by Danielle Evans
Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri
This Is How You Lose Her by Junot Diaz
After The Quake by Haruki Murakami
those are all contemporary ones I liked a lot but if you're looking for more 20th century stuff you can't go wrong with Ernest Hemingway, Flannery O'Conner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Franz Kafka, Jos茅 Luis Borges, Charles Bukowski, Shirley Jackson, Alice Munro, etc. not to mention the tons of great science fiction short story writers
also would recommend A Swim In The Pond In The Rain by George Saunders. it's a collection of classic Russian short stories with breakdowns about the structure and decisions the authors made. would be a good book to start with before a deep short story dive
Kafka
Katherine Mansfield - The Garden Party
James Joyce's Dubliners
Welcome to the Monkey House by Kurt Vonnegut
Angela Carter, The Bloody Chamber
Fairy tales retold through feminist and psychoanalytic lens
Dubliners by James Joyce
James Joyce's Dubliners
BRUH you beat me to it

Orange World by Karen Russel (author of Swamplandia!) is a great horror short story collection.
One of them involves a character merging mentally with a joshua tree.
