In light of modern hip hop becoming stale, always found it odd that artists don't incorporate live instrumentation more like they used to. It gives songs a much more organic/dynamic sound, artists like Kanye, The Roots, Little Simz, Kendrick, Digable Planets etc have all included live instrumentation in their music which in turn is now seen as their best albums.

    Thoughts?

It's crazy how much the production just sounds far more unique and fresh when compared to the current climate of hip hop.

also like... used to be producers mainly were doing their drums on a drum machine and not quantizing it perfectly

to where it has this swinging or a little bit more freedom and s*** but still comes back around the next measure

Yeah you can hear it on tracks like Hood Politics, small things like that add so much to a track.

I'm here for live instrumentation in all music, That whole aspect is on a steady decline in mainstream music unfortunately

  • Oct 21, 2020

a lot of my favorite hip-hop albums involve live instrumentation.

  • Oct 21, 2020

Probably why African Giant is one of my favorite albums to come out recently

Not hip hop but if I was a rapper I’m tryna see if I can get some Kel P production

For whatever reason I’m just not into live instrumentation unless it’s in a more minimalist situation. Very rarely do I like it in hiphop.
For example I feel like I should like the roots but the live drums and jazz guitars just don’t appeal to me at all. But then questlove does drums on the entirety of voodoo, and that’s top 5 albums of all time.

I'm surprised more instruments aren't being used in trap. We had the flute wave

Zaytohven does make the best trap beats as a result of using instruments imo. Don't know why he's so slept on.

But then take an old soul record and chop it to oblivion and I’m all in

I know it's hot to hate on it now but it was dope in the early stages. Zay was doing it like a decade ago anyways. Played out but I enjoy it sometimes

depends on how it's used, it's great when used appropriately but other times it can sound awkward.

That's fair, some can appear quite cluttered but I love that personally.
