True i don't know all that much, but the second part is a good point.

wouldn't it depend on the traffic you're getting though?

You'd think so, but if you do the math, unless the majority of users are uploading uncompressed video longer than 30s, you'll make more money advertising to the users than it costs to host their text posts and occasional photo and audio files.

With Google Ads and a basic web host the "necessary startup capital" is as low as like $25.

I started my own start up, it's a robotics based business but the MVP grind and seed capital begging is the same.

Honestly just build it, make 100 demo users, don't lie to investors and say they're real, just show them how the service works with the demo accounts. That's enough to get you seed capital if it's a good idea.

Best way to start getting real users is to either do a giant ass flashy launch with a lot of ads, or to make a platform that actually works better for something people need. Like are you making a competitor to instagram, VSCO, Reddit? Advertise there.

You aint goin anywhere without knowing how to advertise, CS will only get you so far. Aint no one investing in an idea that's for sure. Rent or build a server and get writing.

TBH though taking investments is always desperate and/or dumb, just grind your MVP and start netting a profit, f*** investors, they aint donators, they'll take their money back and then some whilst f***ing your business over.

Thanks man! That's actually very helpful!

    Will start building it soon

    What's the update

I've created something close to an MVP but don't know if it wouldn't be better If I asked my friends if they wanna team up and make it perfect. (friends from my CS classes)

There's a Google Campus in my city and they promote startups so I'm thinking about going there when I'm more than ok.

Problem is I'm a 2nd year CS student and Android programming is my hobby and I'm self taught. So I don't feel like I'm READY to get going with this product.

I think the idea is there
    The concept is great

But for it to work it can't be just "okay" It has to be perfect.

And I can't get it to the perfect status alone.

I was working on it whole last month and it's already a usable MVP. It's not fast (something I'd have to work harder on bc it's fetching data slow asl) and a very important feature is missing but I don't really know how to get it working.

But user registration is working. Database connection is working. UI is basically done. It's a product I could show to someone to give them an idea of what this can be when it's perfected.

It's working. It looks good. But it could be better and I know it's not good ENOUGH for me to move on with the "start up" idea

Bro it sounds good enough to me. How feasible would it be to get the rest of the features made if you had 3 more people who have graduated with a BS in CS? There are plenty of software developers you could find that just know how to write code but can't come up with good ideas on their own (and they don't care to do so, either). You need to find those people, and hire them on

  • Also, if anyone wants to help me build a web app / website please hit me up lol.

Its honestly a very very simple type of site. Just need a log in system and be able to record / keep their data (database). I basically need a site where people are submitting a form over and over again, except some of the form is responsive and does or doesn't let the rest of the form be completed based on the user's input

Very simple site that will allow people to place an order for a digital product and have an account that remembers their orders + settings, information, etc. The digital product is different for every order so it can't be a simple shopify type solution, bc the product that will be given to them will be based on their inputs such as address, payment type (cash app, card, PayPal), and other parameters. I already have all the code to handle the creation of the unique digital product that will be given to them but rn I have to take orders for people manually and deliver it to them manually

I have an idea for a social media app that could actually be a big thing if done correctly

I'm a CS student so It's not random to have projects like this

But it's a SOCIAL media app. You don't get to a successful sm app without people actually using it.

How do you get people to start using your app? Do you have to start with fake users so that the "first" user won't be the only one using the app?

How do you get funding? One man can't build a successful cross platform app for masses. Of course I could (and will) try to create a draft, an MVP. But there comes the time when I need more help and nothing is free.

How does all of this work?

I know this old but look into how something like Parler is gaining traction rn for some real time data/example

And how something like Quibi failed (not social media tho its more like nextflix, but still).
