I found the melodies on 1989 much stronger than the melodies on any of her other albums, except maybe the folklore deepcuts like mirrorball.

It went beyond catchy, it's inexplicable. that was pop mastery. so, here I wasnt talking about lyrics, and I know she sacriiced that aspect for the sake of pop clichees.

but the melodies of Stay, How u Get The Girl, Style, New Romantics are as good as the biggest classics of Madonna, MJ and such

So you think her strongest songwriting was on the album where she wrote less than ever before?

    That's not a strong sign

Maybe there's a reason her melodies got better when she brought in writers known for writing pop classics

also i thought people had Red as the classic Taylor album

isn't it a proven fact that she wrote every 1989 song together with her producers? so she had a big influence on those songs. I just think she was in the right mindset around 2013-2014, pop was at the right place (synthpop was still strong) and Martin/Shellback were at a creative high too. it was just an example of the stars aligning for her. compared to reputation lol-

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, certainly not with THOSE songs (sans Style). You would’ve been better off picking Blank Space and Shake it Off to make this argument

Taylor Swift definitely has better melodies than Madonna tho

Shake it Off? it served well as a lead single. but musically, it isn't interesting.

those deepcuts I mentioned have some really complex production and beautiful chord progressions.

i'm sure she contributed, she's been a talented writer her whole career it would be weird if she didn't.

but an album with them isn't really a showcase of her writing.

The reason I brought up Red and Speak Now is it's the era when she was probably most productive as a fully formed writer.

A bit like how if you wanted to know how good a producer Kanye is, you'd listen to Blueprint and Dropout, not the Life of Pablo. Even though he's still contributing a lot, it's a different role

red folklore and 1989 are the classics

i think it's too early to tell with folklore. didn't seem like an instant classic to me. Definitely a good reset for her direction wise though

I think Red is the most undeniable classic she has, but I get the argument for 1989

yeah i don't think Speak Now is a classic, but i think it shows her own personal songwriting style off way more than albums like 1989 and reputation
