  • Maybe my vision is clouded by nostalgia but I remember hip-hop having much more diverse superstars that had huge following and that honestly seemed like hip-hop was more dominant than now. We had the big guys like 50, Jay, Em, Wayne, T.I, Ludacris, Jeezy, Game, Ye, Lupe, Soulja Boy, Cudi, etc. Even if you weren't the top commercially we had Busta, E-40, Clipse, Lloyd, Rick Ross, etc type rappers in the background with some buzz.

I'm talking multiple stars at once coexisting and everyone listening to all the hits with longevity. Classics after classics. MOTM, Carter 3, 808s, Blueprint 3, Madvillainy, Be, GRODT, Fishscale, Speakerboxx/The Love Below there's too many to name.

Now you got some nobody's dropping tiktok bars and it's just Drake still at the top like honestly I'm so tired of this. Who we got in this generation? Lil Baby and Lil Uzi? Playboi f***ing Carti? Seriously what happened to the game. Niggas can barely crack 100k and dropping come and go projects. What's this generations classics? I can only think of ? or Goodbye and Good Riddance. Maybe Astroworld just because of the success but it's not even his best album. Am I just old and out of touch or yall agree?

There was a time when rock and/or metal music was dominating music and all that did was lead to a bunch of one hit wonders and some of the worst bands/albums released in the genre(s).

Rap is simply having its time in the sun until it inevitably burns up.

All of music is this way nowadays
Theres a new pop girl every other week

You have to give them time. Drake was 25 when he dropped take care. Kendrick was around the same age when he made GKMC

Artists like Roddy, Uzi, Carti, YB already did way more than they did at the same age.

  • market is too fragmented rn. Like a street rapper w a relatively niche audience is what's selling well week to week right now. The rappers doing superstar first week numbers are the ones that were putting up those numbers 5 years ago. Just a consequence of the streaming era and everyone needs to get used to it

A classic is personal man. Just accept that and you will feel much better

I understand that for sure but I guess I'm talking more about the ones that make a big splash with longevity compared to rap albums not really sticking around now. There's no real classic because there's examples in op someone might disagree with so it's all personal opinion.

I could remember people saying 808s wasn't a classic when it first released and it was looked at as Ye's weakest album so maybe albums now will age like that.

  • Because these new rappers aren’t capable of making classics

  • Sep 5, 2021

The focus in music has shifted from crafting well made albums towards doing dumb meme s*** to get the most attention for ur song. So obviously theres no longevity cos most artists arent even interested in making great albums anymore

Rap isn't the only genre that's become stagnant in that way, if anything we have more acts to stay than many other genres. Ask people who is making waves in rock, they don't know. Every week a new popstar comes in, R&B is in a weird spot ect

Streaming has destroyed the art of album making tbh.
There are few who still like to make complete albums without chasing streams.
Kendrick, Weeknd, Ye excluding Donda, frank ocean, fka twigs,

  • Plus I feel like streaming shifted things a little bit. It's not hard to do antics and get people to stream your music, there's no commitment there. But when you had to buy singles that meant people had to be REALLY f***ing with your s***.
