i'm not sure if it's just me being cynical, but it just reminds me of gentrified rnb from the 70s/80s. it's like the auditory version of those dropship shirts that you see on IG with the anime girl holding a gun in front of a Mazda RX7...shit just doesn't sit right lmao
change your avi to family guy or simpson u don’t deserve an anime avi 😡
jk idc about city pop

a Poochie avi would go hard af ngl
sounds like 80s pop music but in japanese i dont really see the problem
from the songs i’ve heard, they just seem a little bland to me. if you got any suggestions or whatever, i’m open to hearing some
A lot of it is literally R&B from the 70s/80s though
true, maybe i just dont find it all that engaging. s*** makes me wanna listen to a Luther Vandross or Alexander O'Neal album lol. any city pop songs you recommend i listen to?

im not an expert or anything
i've heard this type of music before but i didn't know it was called city pop i looked it up on youtube
i think it sounds nice but i can understand why you might think it sounds like an anime theme song or some s***
i dont really watch anime so maybe you think s*** like that is cringe

I don’t think that’s the sound city pop is trying to achieve. It’s got its own, pretty distinct sound to it that makes it “city pop”, shouldn’t judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree you feel me?
If you’ve got like 45 minutes to kill you should listen to this album, it’s one of my all time favorite albums across the board
The intro, Storm, Hot Shot, and Rainy Walk are my favorites. You can find them individually on YouTube if you don’t wanna listen to the whole thing
this was the video
sounds like alot of hall n oates
granted not all of it is like that but if u can see why ppl like yacht rock & the like u should be able 2 see why ppl like city pop

Wow maybe this city pop is pretty good
Some of the songs are great but overall it's mostly just generic pop music but from the 80s. Feel like it's being pushed by "i'm born in the wrong era" type dudes.

kinda how i felt when making this thread ngl. it seems more like an aesthetic for teens/college kids more so than the music itself. if it was about the music, you’d see a lot more mfs diving into that sound outside of the city pop bubble…that’s ofc if they weren’t aware of those artists before yfm

i will listen to this while i study for my exams thank you
It's just 80s pop but has the foreign allure that people like with the Japanese's more maximal-epic take on 80s pop
Imo City Pop is 70s/80s funk with harmonic changes that imply the amplification of moods associated with 70s/80s funk, such as a blend of romance and mystery
And the key here is “amplification of moods”. That’s why if you ever see the term “sugary” used to describe it, this is why
