It's not my intention to offend or upset anyone...I agree that Afro Latinos should have been represented stronger in the play/film...as someone who is not from Washington Heights and is admittedly ignorant when it comes to those neighborhood dynamics I watched the film and loved it...it was great seeing a predominantly Latino cast singing great music and seemingly having the time of their lives and found the story to be very inspiring...I want ppl to support this film so we can get more films like it but also understand there needs to be more attention paid to those accuracies and don't fault anyone for bringing those concerns up

I'm sorry if I offended anyone...going to stop talking about this now as it's clearly not my place

    I respect that

Thread is almost more cringe than the movie

  • mentalcase420

not what he said at all and you're implying Trevor's not qualified to have an opinion because he's not black enough...try watching the actual interview he was saying those were his initial thoughts and then allowed Lin to respond and basically say those criticisms are valid and he should do better...they both agreed the criticisms are valid...really nothing to be offended by unless you're reaching and looking for a reason to keep s***ting on Lin...Trevor's the one who brought the subject up in the first place if he wanted to disregard those critiques he would have just not discussed it

also Lin did not do the casting for the film...two white people did...nobody's getting on their case though because of course he's the face of the play since he wrote it (when he was 19 at that)

That’s like me being upset for not having enough Mexicans in there and just a flag waiver at the end of the movie to rep us. The story itself and characters are relatable to all Latinos but I get why some feel a way. Can’t please everyone but let’s get what we can do we can next time do it right.

  • watched it a 3rd time before it leaves HBO Max...still enjoy the hell out of it and one of my standout favorites of 2021 so far

There are legitimate and far more material reasons to hate LMM for the piece of s*** he is.

This "controversy" is not one of them and it's extremely stupid media click fodder

what reasons are there to hate LMM?

I hear ppl make fun of dude all the time for being a geek or w/e but have yet to hear about any legitimate reasons for why he's a POS as you put it...far as I can tell he's a good songwriter who found his niche and is getting paid off that...so what's the offense? does he donate money to terrorists? does he f*** over ppl who help him along with the way? is he some monster behind the scenes who just acts like a dork in public? I even tried to google why people hate lin manuel miranda and still couldn't find any legitimate gripes with the guy other than being cool with Obama lol

Did I enjoy the spectacle/event of watching this in a theater in New York City with my Puerto Rican family? Yes.

Is it a great movie with memorable songs? Not really.

Anthony Ramos did a great job, though.

Are there any Dominicans ITT? If so, did you find the dreamer stuff patronizing at all?

I thought there were plenty of great, memorable songs in the film...96000, When You're Home, When The Sun Goes Down, The Club...Usnavi's verses on the In the Heights opener and the closing track are fantastic IMO...still listening to the soundtrack quite a bit and prly gonna buy on vinyl so to each's own there

I didn’t hate any of the songs while I was watching it but it kind of felt like one long song to me for the most part, and none of it stuck with me the way anything from Hamilton did. I remember liking the pool song and the piragua song and especially the abuela song but I couldn’t tell you how they go. The songs all completely melted away from my brain the second the movie ended, which I don’t remember happening with Hamilton, and I went into both movies completely cold, didn’t know any of the songs at all.

I will say the first time I watched In The Heights (at home on HBO) I enjoyed it but wasn't floored by it until I saw it a 2nd time in theaters where it really all started to click for me...I do agree some of the songs blend into each other but that happens a lot in musicals and happens in Hamilton too...I think with a 3 hour runtime or w/e Hamilton was able to fit more music in there and clearly Miranda had sharpened his skills by that point whereas In The Heights was his first big production (21 Chump Street worth a listen though it's on streaming and is like a 5 song mini-play with Ramos)

watch it again or give the soundtrack a listen and I think some of those songs will grow on you more...only thing that ruins 96000 in the film for me is the obvious CGI at a few points which took me out of it briefly...you're probably right that Hamilton's songs are catchier though and stick with you immediately

as a film/story I can see where some people could have complaints...biggest conflict is between the people of WH and gentrification and the relationship conflicts between Vanessa/Usnavi and Benny/Nina do seem kind of silly when you really break it down...like "y'all falling out over THIS?" lol

it's just a great feel good film to me...didn't need to be super thrilling or suspenseful...not perfect by any means but as someone who generally doesn't gravitate towards musicals I really like this and Hamilton

I feel this. It is definitely a feel-good movie if you just go with it.

The pool CGI didn’t jump out at me but I know a lot of people hated it, haha.

It feels like Usnavi (whose name should have also been spelled “Usnavy” haha) should have been with Nina and Benny should have been with Vanessa? Nina was a more interestingly-written character, and Vanessa had kind of a stank attitude that would have made way more sense if she’d been the one who’d recently gone through a break-up with Benny. Usnavi and Nina were also the ones involved in Sonny’s situation, and Usnavi wanting to leave NYC and Nina wanting to come back could have been an even more interesting thing for their romantic story to play off of.

I believe you said you watched it in theaters and in that case the CGI isn't really that distracting...watching at home even on my big screen though there's one particular shot of Usnavi singing/dancing in front of the entrance to the pool which is clearly a green screen and is sort of distracting...otherwise I have no issue with any CGI used in the film

as for your point about the relationships...I see what you're getting at however it's explained that Nina and Usnavi were basically like brother and sister...they could have written it a different way of course but that's what's established in the film so would have been weird for him to be all like "woah you're back from Stanford and lookin fine now" lol...don't think Benny and Nina ever officially broke up...he explains he didn't want to be a ball and chain keeping her from her potential but I never got any indication there was ill will or hurt feelings about that just a mutual thing...both relationships had them acting hella childish though which is why it's funny when the hair ladies constantly drag them over it...Vanessa definitely had an attitude but I think it's basically saying despite Usnavi having A LOT to say he loses his train of thought and gets nervous when she's around which I think a lot of people can relate to...she's basically a crush he's had for a long while and he's finally taking a chance on making something of it but keeps stumbling over himself

also I've seen some people upset that they don't touch on Kevin's racism towards Benny which is part of the play version however I feel like with the direction the film goes in that's really just an extra layer to complicate things which wasn't really needed...same with Nina's mom being written out of the film like yeah she has a good song in the play but otherwise the big issue was between Kevin and Nina and him being willing to sell his business for her vs her not wanting him to...also if he's racist towards Benny why would Benny be working at his company and in a top position nonetheless?

Oh, all of that would definitely have had to have been rewritten if they switched the couples (Usnavi and Nina being like brother and sister, etc.). Just as standalone characters, I liked Nina more and would have preferred to see her as the romantic lead. I didn’t see what Usnavi really saw in Vanessa aside from her being the skinniest, most light-skinned girl in the neighborhood, which made him look more shallow than they seemed to be aiming for. And I didn’t know any of that about Benny!

lol I didn't think Vanessa was that bad but in general I liked Benny and Nina more for sure...the When You're Home and When The Sun Goes Down scenes are two of my favorites from the film and also two of my favorite songs from it...I could relate to Usnavi and Vanessa too though in a sense...she is kind of presented as an object of affection more than a real person at first but eventually you see more of her vulnerability and her own dreams and ambition...also seems like he probably grew up with her like he did Nina and Benny and they've always been circling each other but have just never done anything about it

Corey Hawkins need to drop a album or do more musicals or something...tremendous singing voice and was even good with the rapping parts he has...in a perfect world he'd at least get a supporting actor nom for that performance bc he was great IMO...Ramos and the rest of the cast were too though I really like Usnavi's rapping and think it's some of Miranda's best writing (from a straight up hip hop perspective not overall songwriting)
