i feel like yall are just gonna s*** on this thread but im genuinely asking, what do you guys think white artists should do to help? more specifically, what can they do through their art? can they even help through their art? is a white persons art about racial injustice inherently bad/corny? is it that the only constructive thing that white artists can do is simply shutting up and using whatever platform they have to signal boost black voices?

Donate and platform for peace. People gonna say it’s PR, but if it’s for the right cause, then it doesn’t matter. Words do a lot but actions mean more. As a celebrity, it’s not reasonable to go and riot because it’s going to distract from the overall message, but if you aren’t going to donate and use your platform for good you’re part of the problem

  • May 30, 2020

Yeah donate and encourage people to do it too and to understand what is going on for black people and help people see that they arent different from other people but are suffering and should be helped, at least thats what I feel like

Always gonna be corny if white artists try to make art about poc struggles. I don't know if silence is the best answer but they need to stop inserting themselves into the conversation like that. For example that track Eminem tweeted out is about him not liking Donald Trump. For many minorities these issues are beyond the president or political parties.

  • May 30, 2020

Scratch that, white artists should make "charity songs" and buy copies of them with 6 credit cards

yeah white ppl art about poc struggles generally gives me the same vibe as that macklemore song about gays, like the intention is good but it comes off corny & a bit tone deaf. i wonder if that's just due to poor execution or if its always gonna be inherently bad

Take a college course on race and cultural diversity in American life and history. They’re free. There’s no excuse not to be informed before you speak

This also applies to Lil Wayne

Coursera has 2, the one with the University of Illinois is great.
    classcentral.com/course/race-cultural-diversity-american-life-9082

Harvard, Warwick, LSE, Yale and a college in Australia usually run free courses and seminars but none are open currently.

There’s great lectures on YouTube on standalone topics, from Brown and Stanford, for example, and classic talks, such as James Baldwin discussing race.

I imagine a lot more colleges will add courses on racial diversity, either from a political or sociological perspective, in the coming Months.

The way I see it, while I’m Black, I’m not American, and while I can’t talk on African American struggles, I can learn about the history and share references with others. White people, American or European, should do the same. We shouldn’t forget history and treat racial activism as an isolated issue.

Missed this completely. Well said. On one hand you can argue that virtue contents itself without words or actions but I think this really has nothing to do with a White person’s sense of “self” and they should stand for something dearer than themselves

Nobody is looking for guidance, celebrities rely on support of their fans to build their brand, it's only fair that the support goes both ways

  • I’m not black so I’m just going to echo @YoungNastyShawty because this seems the right approach for white artists for me.

Just hope Macklemore doesn’t do any corny s***.

Who ITT has implied that that is what we want?

You’re being ignorant for the sake of goading.

Taylor Swift has 82.6M followers on Twitter. If she posts a link to donate to the Minnesota Fund or to the Floyd family directly and 1% of her fanbase donates $1, that is $826,000 raised.

These are the people with voices that can reach out to millions of people

You and I can maybe reach like a 100 people

Big difference plus allot of celebrities are inspiration and heroes to people

    Obviously racism still exists
So ya some people need told this is wrong

Racism will die down over the next few generations imo

But I’m worried there will be more to worry about then too

Honestly I don't see why ya'll want artists to respond. Don't we s*** on actors and other celebrities always trying to be political or send a message. Most rappers arent equipped to make a political statement or to be activists. Just look how stupid Eminem looked yesterday.

On the other hand I do believe they should do something like donate and promote peace as they do have a huge following. I just dont want look towards celebrities as leaders or guidance.
