    what you do

I work for an international organisation

  • CurlyZ

A journalist which is fine for supporting myself, but if I literally had to start supporting a wife and child rn I feel like there’s no way I could do it.

I’m barely financially literate and definitely not great with money but I don’t understand how some people I work with afford what they have when we’re getting paid about the same. What am I doing wrong?

A lot of journos come from privilege (not that that's particularly different from any other professional career). That's a tough gig but I gotta lot of respect for you man, keep fighting the good fight

That must be the case because I feel like I’m no where near home ownership or in position to spend tens of thousands on anything within the next 5 years.

Part of adult life is realizing that there will never be a point where you’ll be satisfied with or not have anxiety about how your resume looks or what’s in it. I get sick to my stomach looking at mine, like someone’s gonna look at it and think I’m a dumbass.

How’d you get into journalism bro?

I’ve always been into media, so I knew early on that I wanted to doing something in that field.

Just worked at it constantly. I’m was always reading and always writing just building that skill until it became easy. Also learned about cameras and microphones and basically just tried to excel at all sides of the media business, so no one could ever say I had any weaknesses. I did it for free for years and then eventually people took notice and wanted to pay me for it.

You went to an Ivy League but didn’t go into Bulge Bracket Finance or Big 3 Consulting?

the only reason I went to an Ivy League is because they gave me a full ride scholarship. Otherwise, I wouldn't have gone to an Ivy League cause f*** this culture of elitism and prestige. My top choice was Oberlin

You got a full ride to Ivy League

You could have been working at Goldman making 185K all in first year out of college. You work there for a couple years and then go work in private equity making double that for less hours

    You f***ed up

It ain’t about the money after all. So long I’m making 3000 euros a month I’m fine. My long term plan has always been to go back to uni for my PhD and then work as a professor/researcher.

I can’t be selling out for money. Investment and consulting firms are parts of a system I’m all the way opposed to. My interests are in the geopolitics and economies of emerging technologies (Blockchains, IoT, AI... etc) as they relate to urban/rural design and migration (human geography). Can’t be going to Wall Street with that

I got into the UN after working for a couple of NGOs in London. My master’s was in development and migration, so that helped. I work on social policies of emerging technologies (mainstreaming open source solutions in the design of smart cities, for example). I speak three languages and a half basically: English, Arabic, Farsi and German. I’m picking up French too.

I feel you don’t get me wrong im not a soulless money chasing w**** but i kind of need a high paying job cus my family will depend on me and my siblings. My parents are immigrants and they poured all their savings and salaries into school for us so the unspoken agreement has always been once were out we’ll support them and our family back home in africa as well. Even now my mom is still working a s***ty low paying job so me getting a relatively high paying job is like my Only option yk?

I’m a deeply political person (former polisci major) and hv my own personal morals and honestly been kind of worries how my social democratic left wing beliefs will reconcile with the corporate arena ill enter after I graduate in 4 years but it is what is. My hope is to only do that for a couple years and find some kind of public sector or government/politics role

But UN sounds like a dream. I speak english and french but idek how one would go around finding an internship like that? You mentioned you have a masters so it seems a grad degree is a given like I thought. My plan B (and preferred plan tbh) has been going to law school at a place like nyu and studying international/human rights law hopefully if i do go that route i can leverage it but idk because thts an extra 3 yrs of me not earning money
