thought we should get a thread going to help keep the people of ktt ahead of the curve

-definitely worth a look through and to remember. has a lot of helpful information

    -hong kong protester tips

    -broad protest tips

    GEAR:

    -------- PHYSICAL PROTECTION --------

Starting from the top you NEED head protection. If you take a rubber bullet to the skull you can DIE or suffer permanent neurological damage.

you want to look like this don't wear head protection

    -Bike Helmets
    -Motorcycle Helmets
    -Construction Helmets
    -Sports Headgear (ie football helmets)

Next you're gonna need clothes to wear. You want them to be strong and mobile. A good example:

    1. Heavy well-fitting jeans you can run in
    2. T-shirt / undershirt
    3. Long sleeved shirt/jacket/flannel
    4. Tough Jacket (Thick Materials/Leather)

Most anti-riot weapons are designed to inflict pain on bare skin (pepper spray and rubber bullets).

This is just the ideal fit but you're gonna have to be carrying everything you're wearing and it's going to be hot as f*** under all those layers so do your best.

You're not gonna want to wear s*** you can't get in and out of quickly and without worrying about what you're wearing. For instance: if a cop is grabbing your jacket you want it to allow you to slip out and escape.

The best defence in a riot is being able to get away from danger. The best shoes are the best shoes you have that can help you get away from that danger.

How the hong kong protesters use umbrellas as a multifunctional tool:
    bloomberg.com/graphics/2019-hong-kong-protesters-umbrellas

Bringing an umbrella might be the most convenient, versatile and useful protection you will be able to find.

Also it might be worth it to wear a cup and/or some protective material like shin guards or kneeguards or even diy some plating under your clothes if s*** starts to get rough.

    -------- CHEMICAL PROTECTION --------

While full face gas masks are the ideal they can be expensive. Alternatively builder's respirators would be another ideal but expensive mask. Another thing I've seen around is something called an "escape hood" which is essentially a plastic bag with a respirator you might be able to find.

Whatever you got, try to get something cuz any protection - a mask, a bandana, a shirt - will be better than nothing.

You're gonna want to wear eye protection BUT NOT HARD CONTACTS. Contacts may trap chemicals between the contact and your eye preventing you from washing them out. I'd avoid soft contacts too, but studies have shown inconclusive whether they may make things worse or not.

Also bring a change of clothes if u can cuz pepper spray and other irritants might seep into your clothes. If you've got hydrophobic or water proof sprays it might be useful to spray your clothes.

Consider bringing heat proof gloves to toss back tear gas canisters. Tear gas canisters work by igniting a solid powder inside the canister causing the powder to become and aerosol.

Canisters will be extremely hot so you can neutralize them by: A picking them up and tossing them back with a protected hand or B by dousing them with water to cool off the canister and therefore stopping the powder from becoming a aerosol.

Also there's some sources that states mixing Campden tablets (which have the active ingredient sodium metabisulphate) with water produces a solution that neutralizes teargas.

It's not really conclusive whether milk or lemon juice helps more than water, but any of them should help especially lots of clean water.

not that i expect "rights" to save you in the moment from a pig with a gun, but maybe knowing them before you attend could come in handy
