The escalating riots are fueled by domestic grievances over development priorities and the country’s decision to switch diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China.
Solomon Islands switched recognition from Taiwan to Shanghai in September 2019, two years ago !!!!!
VIjay Prashad, historian and journalist, claims that "When Sogavare's government shifted his country's link to China, the US - driven by Marco Rubio and other violators of international sovereignty - built a coalition of anti-communists and pro-Zionist Christians. See the Israeli flag held by those making the coup."
Sogavare said he stood by his government’s decision to embrace Beijing, which he described as the “only issue” in the violence, which was “unfortunately influenced and encouraged by other powers.”
“I’m not going to bow down to anyone. We are intact, the government’s intact and we’re going to defend democracy,” he added.
Thoughts?

maybe the fact they burned down chinatown as well, not just parliament

Okay you right
If they burnt down Chinese businesses owned by Chinese people then yeah
Otherwise It could be seen as symbolic
Why would anyone even recognize the government of Taiwan as the legitimate government of China for any reason other than political lip service at this point either. The Kuomintang aren’t necessarily popular and most Taiwanese people consider themselves that before being Chinese, as we see here. Also they wouldn’t accept an independent Tibet nor Xinjiang, so idk what points westerners win on that part
Results from an identity survey conducted each year since 1992 by the Election Study Center, National Chengchi University.1 Responses are Taiwanese (green), Chinese (red) or Both Taiwanese and Chinese (hatched). Non-responses are shown as grey.

Keep in mind they switched policies two f***ing years ago. This is absolutely foreign interference. What kind of organic protest happens two years after something.

IM TIRED
I read elsewhere that the protests where actually because of COVID restrictions and they burned down Chinatown because of racism from thinking COVID originated in China, lots of other news sites seemed to have corroborated this? @op do you know anything about this?
Also always thought Taiwan discourse was weird since the US doesn’t even actually recognize Taiwan technically despite its weird pro-Taiwan slants

Yeah the US treats Taiwan like a deadbeat treats an illegitimate child, willing to pay child support to keep them quiet but not willing to acknowledge them as actually being loved except for when convenient

reddit acts like this toward eastern european countries too. they are legit bloodthirsty casually toward russians but that s*** will come up even with euro countries like hungary, poland, and belarus. if you go in the replies to any headline that mentions russia they dont even act like russians are sentient humans
