it's not as wild as you think it is. people actually believe scientology too at which the upper levels legit admit its all a scam. people look for sociopolitical fulfillment in increasingly derived manners when they cant get anything from foundational society otherwise. it's not that hard to get people to believe insane s*** if they actually believe in anything reasonable, it's just a matter of how you ease people into things and balancing what they do believe with what they don't believe or are apathetic towards
