Why do people like following sports stats? I enjoy playing sports and even watching them in person, but following contracts, trades, etc is just a mind numbing numbers game to me. What’s the appeal?

I've always been interested in the financial side of things, in general and not just sports. Seeing the process in for example sports is enlightening.
