    bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound/greatest-films-all-time

10 Singin' in the Rain (1951)
    9 Man with a Movie Camera (1929)
    8 Mulholland Dr. (2001)
    7 Beau travail (1998)
    6 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
5 In the Mood for Love (2000)
    4 Tokyo Story (1953)
    3 Citizen Kane (1941)
    2 Vertigo (1958)
1 Jeanne Dielman 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975)

Their #1 choice is surprising, but I’m happy to see!

    Thoughts?

I think this very brief article is also worth a read: anothergaze.com/elena-gorfinkel-manifesto-against-lists

And Laura Mulvey on their new #1: bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound/features/greatest-film-all-time-jeanne-dielman-23-quai-du-commerce-1080-bruxelles

I’ve seen 95 now, after getting around to Shoah.

Final 4 (because I’m unfortunately not sure when I’ll ever see histories du cinema):
Madame de… / Imitation of Life / Journey to Italy / The Piano

Portrait of a Lady on Fire is great, but not better than the films it's trying to replicate

Remarkable that what was considered #36 10 years ago is now #1, above s*** that's never left the top 5 since they started doing this

In the Mood for Love deserves #1 if anything

yeah Portrait is the only one I think could be on the list, but it's still too high

and for the record, i'm not saying there aren't any post-2012 films that deserve to be on the list, i just don't like the ones they chose.

I think they expanded voting pool this year, the directors list also placed the Akerman very high (but not quite #1)

Jeanne wasn't even in the directors list 10 years ago though

Yea idk how they poll directors. Individual polls may come out later. The movie is an obviously less safe pick than prior decades, with it being so long and relatively ‘uneventful,’ but I appreciate the originality.

It’s a good movie but nowhere near one of the best movies ever.

As much as I love Bergman, I’m glad some of his stuff got booted for new directors. There’s too much good stuff to just name the same names again and again

On a related note, I’m pretty sure the full list is like 50% French and Italian. I‘d easily cut a Godard or Fellini (same rationale as above) for a Jia Zhangke, Tsai Ming-liang, or Kim Ki-duk

Wish we could just skip ahead to the point where The Master is in the top 10. It’ll happen, it’s just way ahead of its time.

I just feel like you get all the same legendary acting and technical mastery that you get in There Will Be Blood, but the movie gives you characters you can empathize with more. It has way more heart. That’s why it will surpass TWBB in time.
