That was not good acting
Probably the worst filmmaker of the last 10 years
He’s only in the business of writing baaaaangers
Frances Ha
Fantastic Mr Fox
Meyerowitz
Life Aquatic
Marriage Story
Greenberg
He does make a lot of movies about white hipsters tho

look at all that trash
Well, I enjoyed it. I actually enjoyed it much more than I expected to, since the trailers looked boring and uninspired. I think all the scenes focusing on young Spielbergs creativity and making the films were the highlights, whereas the family drama and school storylines felt meh. There’s alot of passion behind it and it’s very evident, but I think trying to escalate what was probably a more nuanced family drama and mixing it with the filmmaking whimsy doesn’t hold together as well as it could’ve. I think the main guy playing Spielberg did pretty great, he’s very likable and easy to root for. As well as a good performance from Paul Dano, and two smaller roles that were definite favorites in Judd Hirsch and Lynch man himself . I’d give it a 8.5-9/10. Gotta rewatch before I know wether it’ll go down because what doesn’t work for me really dragged it down but I still think for the most part it’s a great film.

I’m actually curious how he feels about his moms after this, cause the way Spielberg decided to portray her in this is cold
She’s extremely unlikable for damn near the whole movie. I’m not even sure I blame Michelle for it because I feel like at this point whatever the actor delivers in one of Spielbergs films is 100% what he wanted.
Bad acting is because of the direction
Just said this! And I agree

Sis deserved an Oscar for Manchester by the Sea. She knows how to act.

It’s funny cuz from the reviews it seemed like Spielberg was highlighting his mom way more than his dad. Also seems to be why Michelle is being considered a lock to get Oscar noms while Dano is getting no looks

💯 good point

but you rated the movie as almost perfect. was the bad acting not as impactful as previously mentioned?

Didn’t say it was bad acting, I believe it’s what Spielberg wanted from it. I just agreed with the notion that if a performance isn’t great it’s on the director, especially one as prolific as Spielberg. It just was a really strange and not really entertaining choice. It leans mean spirited, but it is what it is. And I also said I came out with a much more positive outlook but on rewatch my score might go lower cause of my issues with it. The more I think about it the less of a 9 it is and more of a 8. There’s a lot that works for me but the stuff that doesn’t drags it down.
