Imagine going from a soundcloud rapper with a small local buzz to performing on stage with Ye at the Donda concert in the Mercedes Benz Stadium in just 16 months, it's understandable to look a bit awkward or uncomfortable in that situation

I get your point but let’s not act like she’s got no autonomy here. She put in the work and made her name to the point that this was mutually beneficial. If anything she’s moving smart as hell.

The reaction from the Taylor fan base has been almost entirely positive, even with what seems like a majority hating the remix itself. If you look at her subreddit most of the comments are along the lines of “I hadn’t heard Ice Spice and listened to her stuff, I see what Taylor sees in her and this wasn’t a good showcase of her abilities.”

They actually keep specifically calling out that she would’ve sounded better on the original instrumental rather than the halftime version which is 100% true, and it shows they’re actually beginning to familiarize themselves with her style. Yes Taylor should get flack for how she’s been moving but I’m not pitying Ice Spice, if anything this is one of the more impressive breakouts for a rapper in years.

I hope she’s handling it all as well as anyone can in that position, I mean she’s only 23. I think my optimism comes from having been a Taylor fan for years and watching her fanbase (besides the more parasocial ends) largely call out her bullshit and call this whole remix strategy for what it is, while also being willing to trust her artistic endorsement and give Ice Spice a fair chance. It’s a tough line to walk and I give her fanbase more credit than her tbh.

My hope is that Ice gets new listeners and some inspiration for how to evolve her sound from here. She was namedropping other artists in the indie/pop sphere (like the 1975 which minus Matty I’d actually love to hear her over some production like that) and she’s clearly focused on the music as much as she can be with everything going on. It’s impressive really, but to your point I hope she’s giving herself room to breathe.

An interesting part of this whole thing from a creative standpoint is that if the public accounting of the collab is to be believed, she went straight for Karma as the collab. Neither was trying to throw her on some stereotypical hip-hop adjacent song like Vigilante S***, and she hasn’t really gone for a four on the floor pop sound before. Imo the biggest missed opportunity is not letting her flow over the original beat, because if a few fan edits are any indication she could absolutely eat on a straight pop track like this.
