Hey y’all I’m BRAVE, and this is a film sxn breakdown. In every great story is a great character, and every great character has clear goals. In their pursuit of these goals they must make choices that get them closer to whatever they want and in the process, reveal who they really are. Today we’ll look at one of the best recent examples of a character with a great arc and a clear goal in a blockbuster film: Thanos from Avengers: Infinity War.
In Infinity War Thanos is a mad titan whos ultimate goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones and use them to wipe out half of the universe’s population in order to create balance. Throughout the story, Thanos is bombarded with obstacles that get in the way of his goal and reveal his true nature.
When a character has an ultimate goal (wipe out half of the universe’s population) there should be smaller goals along the way (obtain the Infinity Stones), and with each small goal comes a challenge that forces the character to use their wits and their will to make a choice that moves their journey forward. Everything we want comes at a cost.
In the Vormir scene when Thanos and Gamora look for the Soul Stone, Thanos learns that in order to retrieve the stone he must sacrifice that of which he loves, and in this case, Gamora. He is caught between two extreme choices: keep her alive and not get the stone, or kill her and achieve his goal. He chooses the latter.
This choice reveals a deep truth about Thanos: he is willing to sacrifice everything, even the life of his own daughter, in order to do what he feels is necessary and get what he wants. In another superhero film, The Dark Knight, we see a similar scenario in which a character must make a choice; a choice that reveals their true self and comes at a great cost.
The Joker tells Batman that Harvey Dent and Rachel Dawes are tied up at two different locations. Batman decides to go after Rachel, who is also the love of his life, and this reveals the deep truth that Batman loves Rachel. Of course this comes at a cost when Batman gets to the location and it was really where Harvey was held, thus Rachel isn’t attended to in time and is killed by a time bomb.
By the end of Infinity War, Thanos has given up everything and faced many obstacles along his journey to achieving his goals, including his battles with The Avengers, who have the same goal of obtaining the Infinity Stones. Remember that in order for a character to be a good character, they must have a goal, and on their pursuit of that goal, they must face challenges along the way, or else their true self can’t be shown - and there isn’t much of a story.
