He can be genuinely authentic and capable of having a brillant artistic vision. Euphoria’s Christmas episode dedicated to Rue is a definitive example of his tremendous potential as an artist.
But he’s also extremely vain. He’s more concerned with crafting “memorable sequences” than creating meaningful ones. And the meaningful ones are the only ones worth remembering. He sacrifices tension, emotional drama and sensibility for pseudo-baroque set ups with fast tracking shots and cool transitions. Basically, he thinks, directs and writes like a music video director.
