Idk if it’s specific to us Americans but idk man just a mini rant of how stupid it is that everyone is conditioned to feel like they have to:

    • go to college right out of HS
    • have your career path figured out in early 20s
    • get married and have kids in your 20s (!!!!)

S*** is so stupid. I honestly feel like a lot of mental anguish comes from these arbitrary timeframes that have been pounded in our heads for as long as you can remember. I say f*** that and live your life at your own pace as long as you’re happy that’s all that should ever matter

yeah it’s a complete waste of money to go to college right out of HS unless you can go for free through scholarships or financial aid

i know people 50k+ in debt and aren’t even using their degree because they found out it wasn’t for them

we shouldnt have to make that decision at 18

if you HAVE to go to college right out of HS but don’t know what you want to do, I suggest going to a community college. it’s 2 years, and you’ll likely go for free if you qualify with financial aid or very cheap

then you can always go to a 4 year down the line for another 2 years and get your bachelors

The percentage is not high but I feel it’s more of the idea that you SHOULD be in that 15% is where my problem comes from. Nothing wrong with getting married but it should be when you’re ready. A lot of people I feel like push for that rather than truly finding someone that they can naturally come to that conclusion with

i think society flipped on this matter long ago and your side won before you were even born but you still think you're rebelling against something

I feel like this has completely changed in the last decade. Barely anyone below the age of 40 thinks you should get married in your late teen's or 20's. And non-academic career tracks like trade school or programming boot camps have become a lot more acceptable as well. I remember my high school always advocating for them and gap years, and I graduated like 4ish years ago.

Of course, when you talk to older generations, they have no idea what the f*** they're talking about, and they'll always be stuck in their old ways. So you get a misaligned PoV from their advice that isn't applicable anymore for the most part.

It really is the era of "do whatever you gotta and want to do to have a good life". I mean that unironically.

Alright could be anecdotal but let’s not act like it’s surprising that people feel that way

I get that, work experience is important. More so having a solidified career path at a young age is the problem rather than the concept of working itself

Yep 100%. I think I found a happy medium of falling back from school and finding employment (in which it did make me feel like a failure) but that paved the path for me to want to go back to school and put me in the great position I’m in today

Having kids in your 20’s was normal for all of human history up until like 40 years ago. 35 is considered a geriatric pregnancy and high risk

I used to feel that way, but I smoke weed and it pulls me out of that funk.

F*** anyone else’s opinion, do what’s best for you and yours.

  • Jan 12, 2023

Well yes ofc happiness is on your own to find my friend. Just saying that shouldn’t be the singular indicator, unless that’s what you really want!

  • Jan 12, 2023

I understand not wanting to have kids in your 20's, and people in that age range are probably less mature than they used to be, but you can't push it much later. Even your 30's start becoming risky and if you start after that and you're a man, you're almost definitely marrying a woman a lot younger than you

"on track" could also be relative to their own perceived potential, dreams/path in life
