I think it has to clearly define its own lane to work as a piece of music in my opinion. For example, FS/LS is clearly heavily indebted to Prince and MJ musically but also I have never heard either artist do a song like What Goes Around, Sexyback or Summer Love so I think someone like JT shows his influences on his sleeve but also infuses it with enough modern elements to make his own sound. I think of the artists I named, Dua Lipa did the best job at finding her own sound with Future Nostalgia, it just isn't at the level of this record.
Again, that’s fair, but I just don’t see how Tinashe is as innovative as you’re saying she is. There’s nothing on this album I haven’t heard before somewhere else, even though I thoroughly enjoy it
I don’t want y’all to think I’m hating because I enjoy this album but Kelela could’ve made that song man
Kelela isn't as catchy or poppy with either her music elements or her songwriting. Tinashe deserves credit for channeling similar experimental sounds that Kelela was toying with and finding a more catchy and fun variation of that.
Kelela is not generic, if that's the only person you can akin this sound to I'd say Tinashe is in a pretty unique space lol
She’s not the only one but Tinashe isn’t either is my point, this has been a subsection of R&B since like 2013/2014, it’s just not that mainstream
The closest point of reference I have for Tinashe is Little Dragon and in no goddamn way would I say they are doing the same things musically
FKA twigs possibly, Caprisongs has some great moments but yeah I wouldn't describe this as generic really
Maybe needs but the rest is pretty leftfield for traditional r&b

Outside of The Weeknd / PND etc could you link anyone making music like the Talk To Me Nice beatswitch?

FKA Twigs as well but I always regarded her as far more electronic than r&b. Tinashe found a good balance in both sounds and built upon her sound her entire career.
I agree with Rihanna and I haven't listened to Future Nostalgia but I heard it's good
Keep the rest lmao
FN is AOTD

Kelela and Twigs probably the closest stylistically to that, but Rochelle Jordan is close as well but she’s more dance leaning than R&B/pop like Tinashe is
y dont u post in the thread anymore
I just checked out some of Future Nostalgia and it reminds me of FS/LS at points
And I don't really wanna get sucked back in there but i'll be on here until Drake drops

I remember hearing music by her produced by Illangelo, I agree tbh

No I understand what you mean, you're talking about artists like Charli XCX that may not be super popping but still make pop music, thus they are not "popular" pop music

yes but u said u think pop music means popular music which it doesn't
country music is super popular rn
peso pluma is super popular rn
neither is pop music
pop has sub genres, electropop, dancepop (future nostalgia), hyperpop, altpop, indie pop (i hate those last two titles too), etc
