The legendary season that was the first is a given and Nic Pizzolatto is a master for writing those thought provoking and chilling monologues. That was as close to a perfect season of television in terms of technicality that I've seen.
I skipped the second season mainly because the cast was not interesting to me and the reception didn't help.
The third season was actually quite enthralling, I admired how Nic wrote how effective the passage of time can be in that field and what it can do to one's psyche. It also had some of the most convincing aging and make-up, Mahershala absolutely killed that role and the chemistry with Stephen couldn't have been better. My only issue was the last episode - It sucked all of the investigating away & was wrapped up in an overtly exposed scene of some random character revealing everything - extremely lazy writing and an underwhelming reveal.
That last scene of Mahershala walking into the jungle and getting lost in the night was magic. I'd be interested in another season of True Detective but only if a proven writer is at the helm.
Keep Sam Levinson far away from this lmfaoooo
It all depends on the lead and writers and how much effort they put into it.. season 1 was special because Matthew put so much into it.
Season 2 is actually really good. Never understood the hate other that it followed S1 which was goated instantly
Im cool with this cus its obvious that Nic cant replicate the high quality of s1 by himself. S3 was decent but very forgettable, and S2 was straight up awful.
Give this show to someone whos consistent.
