To me it’s about having impactful, entertaining, and or relatable lyrics with good delivery while still managing to make a great song. I think this can be done in many ways tho.

For example my two favorite rappers to listen to right now are Playboi Carti and Navy Blue. Both are artists I consider to make great music they just have different approaches to rapping and hip hop in general.

Voice is so important to me.

  • Bars. I like Bars with Subtance.

    I’m talking about Hardcore Bars!

Now add an Mean & Vicious flow or some decent cadences to the bars, you can be melodic with it but not to the point where it sound like s***..

When I say substance I don’t mean s*** like Saving the World and Curing Cancer or something, I mean along the lines of say something Jaw Dropping, Breath Taking, Impactful.

Also, it’s not what you say but how you say it!

Good rapping would be mean a degree of technical skills, (rhyme schemes, flows, metaphors, word play, etc)

While also having some form of meaning and not just words put together while being nonsensical.

I don't know if I have a definition. I like different styles and appreciate different approaches.

Battle rap bars with braggadocio punchlines and wordplay is great for inspiration to improve my own own writing while simple yet poignant conscious lyrics are dope for more emotional reasons.

    basically this
i don't think a rapper gotta be super technical or anything they just gotta have that thing that draws you in and gets you feeling that s*** to the point you got every line memorized even the slight cadence in their voice lol

    Yeah

Honestly it’s a bunch of different s*** that can still be considered “good rapping”. That’s just what it is for me right now.

I remember when I went through my real rap phase in middle school, I only acknowledged a rapper if they were a technical lyricist that always rapped about substantial topics n s***. I realized I was limiting myself and there were so many styles of rapping besides what I was listening to and was still good

    Good question, Shaq

I would say an artist who conveys compelling concepts whether they be personal, fun, or just clever- preferably all three. The tools they use to convey these concepts would be their delivery, flow, and even beat selection as the beat accounts for a lot of a song's success or failings tone wise. In the writing component, the rapper should have their own voice as well.

That said, the compelling concept aspect has really fallen to the wayside even with more rappers than ever. Branding one's sound and then evolving to keep up with market trends has taken precedent over capturing the specific, irreplaceable performance. As groups have withered under the accounting realities of artist income, rappers have also released more and more music. It's a diluted industry often with the most hardnosed writers suffering under some of the least interesting and most cliche production. It's rare for both to hit.
