inspired by chloehotline's thread. there was some variety to the answers in that thread, which made me think that maybe a lot of record labels suck. we know some things about some of them -- execs are clearly in charge and generally make a lot more money than their artists, artists can possibly get weird stipulations or lacking budgets for their projects, artists sometimes have to change the direction of their music to suit market needs even if such is not what the artists themselves think to be creatively optimal (this is kinda part of "weird stipulations", but w/e i'm considering it to be an additional negative trait)
what record label seems good? what one would u wanna be a part of
(ideally for rzns that aren't just that u stan the label (co-)creator, but if that's ur rzn then go head )

Any label will be good to you if you are a big enough artist, and most labels will push you in a different direction if what you are doing isn't working commercially. even a small label like TDE is known to rush music and make artists go in a different direction if top dawg doesn't think fans will like it. And a big label like warner for example let Mac miller do whatever he wanted with his music, he said they never commented on his music direction or came to the studio for him. so i guess it depends on success.
lol i hope you mean as an artist and not a corporate position
EMPIRE Distribution Label is the only right answer however, I don't know how much they take from their artists.
why u think that?
Kinda was guessing, haven’t heard anything bad about them so far
If I was an artist and I ACTUALLY wanted to be treated really well then unquestionably XL
They literally kept Jai signed for 6 years without him doing anything and helping him get therapy and etc
They believe in their artists and they have immaculate taste and success for an independent label - Jai Paul, Vampire Weekend, Tyler, Adele, Frank, Arca, Radiohead etc all arefrom XL
Anything wrong with GOOD?
Ultimately GOOD and every other artist label is just a subsidiary of a bigger label
They don’t get really any more say for being on GOOD than they would for being on any other Universal label other than slightly different management etc

yea good call on the aritst v. corporate changed title, but it's gettin hard to keep that correct inconsistent capitalization
in any case, i kinda agree with what you're saying, but most don't enter the game as a "big enough" artist. i think most use labels to build their careers -- only a few drakes, kanyes, macs, etc enter the playing field n get all those benefits pretty. maybe more artists in a label have more creative freedom than i thot it'd be cool to find out i guess i assumed that most ppl, if they're fantasizing what label they'd want to be with, that they'd also assume they weren't gonna instantly be drake but maybe never know
The idea of smaller v bigger labels is a complete fiction unless you’re signing independent
80% of the worlds music is controlled by Universal, Sony and Warner
Ultimately they still control you and their music even if you’re on a “small” subsidiary label

yeah. the above post said that empire and caroline are good labels and from who i follow they don't f*** you over even if you're a small artist.
and what i meant by using mac miller as an example is that it happened after he was big. originally he was on rostrum records. the warner stuff didn't happen until he left them and was way bigger than before

dropping gems of info merci beaucoup
it makes sense too because the industry i'm fixated on now does similar s*** the big companies are just taking over the smaller ones but keeping the smaller companies' names so as to provide the illusion of diversity and independence from huge corporate structures it's a farce

Exactly
It’s depressing but it’s good for people to be aware of at least
QC seems to do everyone on there right.
Nope. Look at Maco, Skippa and Jose Guapo a lot of their early acts got pushed to the side when Boat came and thats not right
They s*** on TDE but I’d love to be on TDE or Dreamville
Just sound like labels that give you creative freedom
Brainfeeder seems dope, not sure if its actually good to sign to though. Couple people said empire pretty emphatically, anyone know why?
