Pop music is actually a genre with its own signature sounds. This is somehow a hot take amongst people online who know music yet the average music listener has the common sense to know it to be true. I don’t quite understand it myself
Carly Rae Jepsen is overrated af. she’s got some really good songs, but her albums as a whole feel really bland to me
Come Home The Kids Miss You is a harmless chill pop rap album if you take it for what it is

People desperately wanted other people to know how different they were for thinking the “underdog” white female 80s pop revival album Emotion was better than the other white female 80s pop revival album 1989 by big bad major artist Taylor Swift
what gets played more today by a less aged demographic?
You asked who has the most hits. Not who has the hits that lasted the longest/aged the best

Because the backbone of pop music is the form in which the music is presented, typically Verse-Chorus-Verse-Bridge-Chorus. That’s what pop music started out as and it bled into all other forms of popular music whether it be rock, r&b, hip-hop, etc in such a way that it’s no longer signature to “pop music” as we know it today
Of course there are other factors like instrumentation and vocal performance but I think that’s the backbone of it
mine? Britney > Madonna

interesting take
After poptimism took hold in mainstream music publications, too many critics over-corrected from the 'Pop is vapid female music' indie rockism of the 2000s to acting like even the most mediocre pop product somehow carries revolutionary potential, Goop on Ya Grinch is always relevant
Pop critics are also way too scared to criticise anything that could be seen as feminist or queer, you have those factors and you're guaranteed a 6.4 from P4k minimum, nobody really tears into terrible/bland pop music anymore, all the reviews sound like they come from the artist's personal friends trying to come up with positive things to say about a pretty bad demo they just played them
