So far I’ve only played 7. And I’m in between starting 8, 10, or 6 next. From what I can tell, 1-3/5 are simply too dated and after 10 is very hit or miss. But I’m wondering what y’all opinions are on which I should play next

8 is my personal favourite

7-9 hold up as the best 3 in the series if you can tolerate PSone 1990s graphics, midi audio and animations

X and X-2 remastered are pretty good too

12, 13 and 15 are iffy and have a lot of haters

Final fantasy criticism or praise is always directed at the story of the games but I'd argue final fantasys main thing was never having a good story tbh it's a game play series before anything else

But fr tho 5 is not dated, it's got one of the most innovative and interesting class system I've seen in any games period, s*** is so fun to play around with if you really get involved into it, and it's very smooth

you really can't go wrong with any of the ones mentioned in the thread tbh. 8 is prob one of the more contentious picks because of the draw/junction system, but if you can get past that, i'm sure you'll like it.

Final fantasy 8 is really a mixed bag imo like the game play system as potential to be so interesting but it kinda just doesn't get anywhere, that kinda sums up the whole FF8 experience but at the same time the game has such a strong vibe to it that it's kinda just great even though it's kinda terrible too

Replaying through 9 earlier this year I was kinda disappointed ngl like my memories of it were way better than what it actually feels like, like the story, the graphics and artstyle and the setting are all very good but the game play is so slow and one dimensional it's kinda boring
