No, really. I never see video game music taken seriously irl or even in some places on the Internet. For some reason, I see film soundtracks being seen as more "credible" and independent, and video game OSTs kinda fallen off the wayside as just "part of the game" or "not real music"?

Notable artists also tend not to curate video game OSTs-- the only one I can remember off the top of my head is David Bowie and Omikron.

Hot take: even the most classic film compositions don't hold a candle to the most classic video game compositions

Because people take them for granted. Most people see games just that, games, not a brainstorm of lots of people working for the same artistic purpose.

The same reason video games in general are not as highly regarded as film and TV even though in many cases they offer far more potent narratives, artistry and music.

This can also be tied into why animation isn’t regarded as highly as live action in a lot of cases

Video games don’t feel as mature though, I can’t imagine being 50 years old still playing video games often

yuuup as someone trying to break into game sound design and scoring this is definitely how a lot of industry people feel, but they feel equally as fulfilled when music/game lovers acknowledge their work

They just aren't taken seriously or they fade into the background for most players unless the soundtrack REALLY stands out (Nier, P5, entire Final Fantasy series)

But also there's no small amount of nerds and weebs who say s*** like "I hate mainstream stuff I only listen to videogame music and anime OSTs" and they're usually f***ing losers so people prolly don't want to be associated with them and I don't blame them honestly

to clarify, I'm not a big film buff. but I've felt more emotion and liked far more video game works than I ever have film compositions.

not to say that all film compositions are bad or anything crazy like that-- I just think when comparing the highest highs of both forms of media, video game music surpasses film's.

Same way hip-hop didn’t get its respect

People didn’t think it was a good genre until they couldn’t deny it any longer

I think VG soundtracks are on they’re way there in the next 10-15 years tbh

video games are a pretty recent phenomenon in the grand scheme of media. over time, we'll probably see all ages be fans of video games in one way or another.

Never played, couldn't tell you honestly. Was talking more about this guy, I don't know if it's the same.

Just remember Nintendo really tapping into the older population segment with the Wii. Never really paid much attention to VGM, will give your first link a shot. As others have said, I think it's more of the stigma related to video games.
