He always came off like a revivalist act. Kendrick wasn't. He veered hard away from someone like Game who was just eating off the legacy of the west coast. J Cole blowing up is still a mystery to me tho.

Krit could never be as big as the guys he was channeling like Luda

  • math fifty

Doesnt have mainstream appeal like those two

    4IAMLT > Cole discog tho

You think Cole is as big as he is today without Roc Nation pushing s*** like Work Out and Wet Dreamz and No Role Modelz on the radio?

A lot of rappers have had hits. Cole has a career not many can match.

  • BlackOlympian

KRIT Could easily be up there if he had half the backing they had though.

Def Jam gon burn in hell for what they did to that nigga

Hov and Roc Nation has backed Meek Mill more than they’ve ever backed Cole

I always wonder why Jay was never as outspoken about Cole

One of his most successful signings

K.R.I.T. to me is the biggest example of why the "big 3" era was so detrimental to hip hop as a whole. Its like if you werent those 3 niggas you was autonatically seen as lesser than even if that wasnt true most of the time (e.g. wale tbh)

Cause I always thought that as far as singing, rapping, content, flow, that K.R.I.T. was always just better than Cole. Cole is great but like...The Vent, Lions and Lambs, Kings Blues, and Bury Me In Gold? Krit just an alien bruh.

I think the difference is that Cole was at the right place at the right time (and you can argue had 'more appeal') and was given WAAAAY more grace after his flop of a debut versus K.R.I.T.'s flop of a debut (It always felt like after Live from The Underground, which the label f***ed up, he never could shake that 'stench' away. Even though both Cadillactica and 4Eva is a Mighty Long Time are both perfect albums, the latter being a top 5 rap album of last decade) and it just always was one of the biggest stains of the big 3 era to me that KRIT couldn't get his deserved shine.

And that s*** just ain't fair especially for his discography (Return of 4Eva is still the best mixtape of the 2010s.)

I feel like I remember Cole saying Hov didn't want Cole to be in his shadow, if he repped him too hard he might be seen as a Memphis Bleek.

(I agree a better balance could have been struck tho)

I mean the big 3 wasn't that until like 2017. Before that krit def had chances to be in the convo. Big Sean and Wale def still were. Them 3 just outlasted everybody else and kept evolving while staying consistent. One thing worth mentioning is that Krit was VERY anti mainstream. He didn't want to compromise AT ALL while the others did so but still kept their artistic integrity in tact. I respect Krit for that but it definitely held him back from being in the convo overall

The biggest difference between Cole and KRIT was his affinity to his fans. People don’t give credit to Cole enough for showing up with lunch at his fans jobs, giving scholarships, offering $1 shows etc. he did this literally for years straight regardless of how bad his music performed.

KRIT did none of that and granted he is a better rapper but not even Drake and Kendrick showed the same care to his fans that Cole did.

The big 3 all did it in different ways.

His albums never matched the quality of his mixtapes. And mainly because Def Jam was a s*** show.

Coles first two were average as well. But this is def a part of it. Although I think born sinner already made Cole a superstar.

The difference I think is that Cole still gained a lot of mainstream fans with his first 2. Especially a lot of women. Once FHD dropped and married the two fanbases he was outta there

    And both had Drake

this. that infographic showing what Drake has done for artists of the 2010s is extremely monumental. A Drake feature/cosign could make or break an artist. Casual rap listeners might not have even checked someone out if they didn't have a Drake feature or if Drake didn't feature them himself.

Rocky and Kendrick got their spotlight from Drake co-signing and taking them on tour.
