My comment was that Putin- like Stalin, isnāt a very nice bloke, wasnāt trying to start a high school history lesson. Zelensky is no angel either but heās not the one invading countries.
"Anniversary" like we should be celebrating this?
Anniversaries are also commemorated, not always celebrated.
Why are people ITT struggling with the word anniversary? anniversary literally means the date in which something began/endedā¦ hence minutes silences on the ANNIVERSARIES of the start/end of previous wars e.g. WW1 and WW2.
I know, not blaming u.
Anniversary sounds like something to celebrate, but that could be me. Iām not a native English speaker
No, youāre correct. Anniversary is used in a nearly exclusively in fond remembrance of something. We donāt have āanniversariesā for the Holocaust, slavery, or 9/11, we have memorial days for those things.
Op, Iām not sure if youāre serious or trolling, but anniversary is the wrong word to use here.
Edit added the word nearly

We literally have Pearl Harbor, 9/11, Challenger disaster, etc. anniversaries.
Its literally the definition.
An anniversary is the date on which an event took place or an institution was founded in a previous year, and may also refer to the commemoration or celebration of that event.
Can't believe how many are just objectively wrong on the definition of anniversary.

An anniversary is the date on which an event took place or an institution was founded in a previous year, and may also refer to the commemoration or celebration of that event.
Pearl Harbors day is referred to as āRemembranceā, 9/11s day is called āMemorialā, and Challengers day is just called āSpace Shuttle Challenger disasterā day. Anniversary is synonymous with those terms but they arenāt necessarily interchangeable because of the common social context of themā¦ with anniversary being a positive one.
Call any of those days an anniversary in front of any normal person and theyāre going to look at you weird.
