I first watched 12 Years a Slave a few years after it came out and didn't really follow movie discussions at the time of its release in 2013. I had no idea what ppl thought about it when it came out, and later learned it won Best Picture for that year. But before that I'll say it left a huge impression on me and definitely was something I've never seen before. I'm not from the US and knew only so much about slavery so seeing it in such excruciating detail was very moving

I showed the movie to my girlfriend who never saw it tonight, plus it's been a while since I watched it. Well I totally forgot how raw and almost too graphic it is so it was more uncomfortable now than it was even on some of my rewatches (I saw it maybe 3 times before that over the last few years). My partner didn't dislike the movie but obviously it was a tough watch

I know that nowadays people largely pan it as 'torture p***' type of stuff, especially as it concern racism. I don't believe it was a popular notion even as far back as few years ago, not from what I've seen. But I wanna know what your opinion was on the movie when you first saw it, and if it changed since then? Do you see it in any special regard: one of the best/worst/most important/favorite or otherwise?

I didnt mention technical qualities of this movie since it doesn't really slack there; locations, performances, music, and cinematography, well, serve the topic well. The narrative and look of the movie felt a bit hollywood-y to me this time around, you know the feeling when you watch a movie and it feels like it's 'made' for awards and festivals. and I had some irks with the pacing but I cant formulate those right now. but yeah what do you think!

  • watched it many years ago and i remember it being mostly fine until they shoehorned brad pitt character

it was fine.. it didn't feel like it was 12 years tho.. something was missing...

  • You needed to live through the Obama era to get the full weight of this

  • ironic what you’re describing cause this is maybe the only film about slavery I can endure without absorbing the negative emotion of it, for whatever reason. I think it’s a great film

  • My review:

Steve McQueen is a very skilled director and I danced around this man’s filmography before finally landing on the one that won the big award and I must say… something here IS missing but I just can’t put my finger on what. Good acting from most of the star-studded cast, love the cinematography… the score? Fell short from, thought it was ripping Inception and here I am finding out that yes, yes indeed Hans Zimmer self-plagiarized.

Also, Brad Pitt’s character? No build up to him showing up and giving out this random monologue. His appearance as a whole in this film is sort of a head-scratcher. Overall, I think it’s fine, well made film but I do think that it lacked in the story department.
