20 years ago, Ashanti released her self-titled debut album. Selling 503,000 copies in its first week, it was the biggest first week sales for any female debut album. Today it still holds the record as highest first week sales for a female R&B debut.
At one point during that same year she was also the first artist since The Beatles to have 3 songs in the top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100.
An icon of the 2000s. Beautiful voice, beautiful woman, and undeniably important for the culture and basically gave J Lo her vocals on some of her biggest hits

My dad told me Ashanti was the biggest R&B girl at the time. He said Bey was big but she was in the process of proving herself from DC. And then Alicia was in her own lane and sounded a little more traditional. Ashanti was the main R&B/hip hop girl, and her numbers proved it. I think her first 3 albums all debuted at #1
