For the first time Ye, Drake, Travis and Rocky dropped their projects that were much worse than their previous ones
there were good songs and a few bangers but still.... c'mon bro

    TLOP >> ye
    views/more life >>>> scorpion
rodeo is much harder than astroworld aka the most overrated mainstream project ever
ALLA is miles better than testing on this one we can agree
funny thing i fully switched up to Spotify in 2018 and mainstream rap weren't the same ever since. I dont enjoy mainstream rap albums since then

yep and the flip side is it was the start of a tragic or underwhelming turn for all the guys who were supposed to replace them at least popularity wise

X died, Mac died, Chance didnt drop an album in 2018 when his hype was high and then flopped the next year. etc

the genre started spinning out in 2015/2016 with the SoundCloud era, that era is somewhat downstream from all of the meme-y get rich quick post-ironic white rappers that are plaguing the genre right now, let alone the primarily melodic/production driven approach for better or worse

i agree w almost everything else tho, ASTROWORLD is a great album i wouldn’t call it overrated personally

if that gas and hype stuck around UTOPIA on the other hand…

Rodeo not better than Astroworld, nah. I refuse. And I been to all the shows. Astroworld was something else. There’s a reason he can do stadiums today and it’s that album lmfao

With Ye, I think it’s sad to say things went wrong. Maybe lyrically, but you can’t find any good music from 2018-2021 with everything that dropped in that time and the eras?

I didn’t like testing, but from my perspective, it was very well received. He went on a sold out tour and even Drake came out to pay his flowers.

Guess it just depends on perspective

Ye was the first Kanye album that was disappointing. Truly sad times

Fortunately for us he rebounded with a classic the following week(KSG)

Can tell u never been to Brazil

2017 was a great year compared to 2018 but I think that’s the year I switched to streaming so I think this time period has something to do with the music overall. Anyone know what year was the big streaming shift?

The zoomer kids who listened to artists that died are still on artists today that mostly aren't Drake, Ye, etc

The great popularity replacement was never happening

Convenient how @op just acts like BITTSM doesn't exist and is worse than Astroworld

hyper commercializations era, a lot of the beats and flows already haven’t aged well

Scorpion is one of the only Drake albums that already has dated production

Cardi B album is dusty, same with Culture 2

This is crazy I was gonna make a thread basically saying TLOP was the beginning of the end of the culture as we knew it and we could’ve never known at the time because everything was going so good but the proof is in the pudding.

ksg annoys me cos why cant he just stick to making 7 good songs if he cant be bothered with music. i mean you go through vultures 1 and 2 he could easily cobble together 7 decent songs same with donda 1 rather than padding out albums

Yeah, but it wasnn't as good as his previous albums. Scott is getting worse with every new album

  • Dec 17, 2024

whatever year that was when Tekashi 69 came out when hip hop starting getting weird

  • Dec 17, 2024

Blame the streaming rule change. Bloated/long albums=higher chance at big numbers

yeah I don't think it's necessarily a replacement. just like, a co-headlining bill lol. the way kanye stuck around for years as one of the top dogs even when drake kendrick cole travis etc all got popular. we could have seen these guys share a lil of the limelight with them. it's a piece of the puzzle but i agree it's not the whole story
