It was a show that expressed women's sexual freedom and at times celebrated women cheating on their husbands/boyfriends or being mistresses. There weren't many (or any I'll have to do my research) shows like that in the mainstream during the late 90s early 2000s, so most viewed it as distasteful, raunchy, trash being peddled to housewives.
