republicans are having a field day with this but outside of the stupid comparisons and arbitrary virtue signaling and doomsaying conspiracies from their end, for real though Canada invoking the emergency powers act is pretty egregious and an insane escalation of both rhetoric and culture war tensions. Even Canada's ACLU-equivalent, which is very liberal as one may expect, has been denouncing this and will challenge it in courts.

the emergency powers act is essentially the highest law in canadian administration possible to invoke, its predecessor was the War Measure Act, it's literally something meant to be invoked during emergencies that threaten the stability of the entire country, like war time. like the only times this act have ever been used just for reference to the severity of this were literally WW1, WW2, and the October Crisis (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_Crisis) when Quebec Separartist Paramilitaries essentially brought the equivalent of the UK-Ireland IRA bombings to Canada.
The declaration of the law essentially says the protestors are terrorists threatening the sovereignity of canada and the fundamental thread of the nation, and the escalation essentially allows prosecution of them as if they were agents of an enemy state during a war, and things such as terrorist designations and freezing of the assets of those involved or who show support.
Invoking the emergency powers act is essentially (according to the Canadian ACLU equivalent themselves) briefly suspending the right to free speech and individual rights until a national emergency is solved. I don't want to feed too much into right wing nonsense or conspiracies but this is absolutely insane and really egregious hence why even liberal law nonprofits are decrying it. The equivalent in the US would be (this is literally an apt comparison given the originator of where the Canadian law comes from, it's not hyperbole) like if Biden re-authorized the War Powers Act from WW2 (the one under which the US sent Japanese-Americans to internment camps) in order to deal with anti-vax protestors here in the US.
