I think the strongest point of the book is its world building. Basing the entire story on geological phenomena is very unique and it was executed better than i expected.

As for characters i didnt have any major issues with any of them other than I don’t really care for anyone other then Essun and Alabaster which is obviously a given since we spend the most time with them. I enjoyed their dynamic quite a bit, hopefully the author fleshes out the other characters like Hoa in the next book.

Plot wise the story is very sound, no real glaring issues i just wish more time was spent on the Damaya storyline because it felt like it concluded abruptly right after they got caught looking at the socket. They didn’t even show her taking her first ring test.

I also felt the Essun storyline was kinda lacking excitement during the middle portion of the story but it finished strong.

The Syenite storyline was definitely the most interesting of the bunch thanks to Syenite being accompanied by another strong character in Alabaster. This section also contained the most action as well which made it more exciting than the others.

As for theories, i had a feeling Alabaster was the one behind the events of the prologue once we saw he had a previous relationship with the stone eaters but i did not forsee Hoa being the narrator of the story.

My biggest questions have to be the true purpose of the obelisks. It seems that the stone eaters designed them and that certain orogenes can interact with them and use their power but what purpose were they built for? And why did they build the Fulcrum right on top of the socket that they built the obelisks?

Also Hoa mentions there were other stone eaters interested in Essun after the events on the island but he was the first to reach her. What is his purpose? And why is he so attracted to Essun? Is it because she can interact with the obelisks?

Im also wondering why Jija kept Nassun alive despite killing his son. Where is he taking her and why?

Also at the end Alabaster mentions the moon which is interesting because at a certain point in the story they allude to the fact there is something missing from the night sky which leads me to believe this worlds moon is missing. Where this will lead i have no clue but it’s def interesting.
