what's funny is I didn't realize how ahead of her time she was with the production on this album. you can hear a lot of sounds that influenced FKA twigs, Rihanna and etc on this album

It seemed natural too like she wasn’t forcing it for the sake of being “artsy” either. There was a time when Rhythm Nation and Control were hailed as her masterpieces and this was like the red headed stepchild because of how left field it was but time has been kind to it and it gets more love than any of her other albums now because when you strip away commercial success and you’re only left with music it’s impossible for Velvet Rope not to shine.

One of my all time fav title tracks. Musically, it’s the perfect introduction into Janet’s world and the message is painfully real.
